  • Question about Hapkido Training

    Hello,

I recently started training in a studio with a very good teacher(i have taken 2 lessons with the man, and i get good "vibes" from him and have watched him teach). He claims to teach Hapkido. His training regimine include both hapkido and teakwondo history. He categorizes his training regimine into kicks, form, falls and tumbling, self defense, and sparring, with some breaking. Also history, belt meaning, ect.

What worries me is this question: Am i really learning hapkido, or teakwondo with self defense added? I am about to earn my white belt and this question goes through my mind. Any input would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

What's in a name? A rose by any other name would smell as sweet....

Sounds like you are just caught up on names. Fighting is fighting. Martial Arts are Martail arts. Self-defense is self-defense. If you think it works, do it. If you don't, don't.

But Fighting is not always martial Arts - Martial Arts are not always Self Defence - and Self Defence is not always Fighting.

Fighting is the lowest form of self defence. It is what you have to do when everything else has failed.

Unfortunately, martial arts don't teach any of it.

          Hey Ranis,

In my opinion the teacher is more important than the particular style he teaches. If you happen to run across a great teacher, stick with him. The greatest fighting system in the world, taught by a "hack", ould be useless.

          Peace,
          John

Ranis - my first question would be what is the instructors lineage with hapkido? what is his ranking in HKD? What org does he belong to? You raise a good question some TKD ppl will make false claims about HKD becuase they learn a technique or 2 here and there.

in addition to the break falls are throws and locks (arm, wrist, etc) being taught. if you don't see that it probably is not true HKD

Also, do you mean "yellow" belt...you start as white

Actually Ipon you start with no belt in his class, he makes you earn it. Im not sure what his lineage or rank is, i do know he is certified from some org, dont remember the name off the top of my head. We do learn throws, and arm locks, (in the self defense portion) but at low levels it starts as someone gets a hold on me, if you know what i mean.
