I was just wondering about what kind of weapons everyone uses. And do you all have videos using the weapons? I would like to see some videos of many different types of weapons. Thanks a lot. Jim.

Most traditional Taekwondo schools don't train with weapons but the American Taekwondo Association has added them. We train in alot of weapons some useless and just for fun but alot are practical. We train disarms for knives and guns. We train with canes, escrimas, bo staffs, chucks, trisectional staff and kamas. Some of these weapons are used mainly by higher ranks such as the trisectional staff. I personally have never used a trisectional staff or a kama besides just playing around with them. Neither of those weapons have any practical use in my mind whereas the others all do. I know exactly what everyone is gonna argue so I will go ahead and cover my self. People are gonna ask how are chucks practical. Well you can use alot of things in the same way such as a belt. We also go over other common things that can be implemented as weapons.

ATA's weapons training is sadly lacking. They do them but do none of them well.
I like short stick, Knife, Bo (for fun)
Trisectional's are useless, nunchucks are illegal in most of the US to even carry so they are useless they also can be beaten very easily.
I prefer open hand training against weapons rather than working with weapons themselves.

I would also prefer empty handed training to weapons training as well. To say the ata is lacking is an understatement. But most taekwondo doesn't train with weapons at all. Our training with the escrima is pretty good but thats just because we have two instructors also involved in some fma's.We do some good weapons disarms. But as far as chucks being useless. I dont believe they are any more useless then alot of the stuff the ata does. Some of the ata self defenses are just sad. Who is going to grab one hand and one lapel come on. They may be easily beaten but there alot of things that can be implemented as nunchakus. I think weapons build good coordination but there really isn't alot of weapons training needed outside of disarms and some basics. How hard is it to hit some with a stick or cut them with a knife. Sure you need to be taught some proper strikes and grips but thats about it. Unless you are going to be fighting some guy with an extensive background in weapons training you really dont need much more then the basics.

I remember when I was in the ATA, and they had just started weapons. You could learn the bong mae ee (escrima) or song jo bong (nunchaku). Then I remember asking one of the masters (I think M.K. Lee) if we ever were going to learn weapons like the sai, kama, sword, etc. He told me they would never add weapons like that because they weren't traditional korean weapons. And now they teach a bunch more weapons, none of which are traditionally Korean.

"Some of the ata self defenses are just sad."
SOME? Some are useful, but the rest (majority) are crap.
Oh, and the only states that ban nunchakus are CA, MA, and NY. They are legal in the real of the 47 states.

A brief error in judgement!
[QUOTE=bvermillion]Most traditional Taekwondo schools don't train with weapons ... WRONG!
How much more traditional can you get! The video "The Early Masters of Taekwon-Do" records the original RoK Oh Do Kwan TKD demo team! They made TKD what it is (and demonstrated more currently what it is not)!
TRADITTIONAL and FUNCTIONAL!
TAEKWON!

I am not saying what they use to do. I am speaking of just what they do. WTF doesn't train weapons. No school around me trains weapons. ITF doesn't train weapons. Most taekwondo schools dont train with weapons. If you say anything other then that you are wrong point blank I am not going to argue the idea that they do because I know they dont.

Nunchucks are illegal to carry in Missouri. So your information about where there are legal is in error. they are also illegal in VA. There are a few others but I forget the exact ones now because it doesn't matter to me, I don't live there and I don't use nunchucks except for when I have to teach them.
I will go one step better. I remember Grand Master H.U. Lee laughing at an instructor who asked when we would be able to train in weapons. He made quite a bit of fun of him and said why would you waste your time when you could train your hands and feet.
I also remember a Tournament in Tulsa where Master Westbrooke had a demo team use a trisectional staff. Master Alliemeyer got up and told them to retire their uniforms (the were non-standard gold and black) and never wear them again and to not use those weapons anymore. Master Westbrooke looked like someone just broke all his ribs.
Our stick work in the ATA is nowhere near as good as it should be. We too have an FMA instructor that helps with weapons.
They added weapons to make money, not to be able to teach quality with them. I'd prefer they just stick to punching and kicking. Otherwise they need to make sure what they are going to use is worthwhile.

I never had the opportunity to train with weapons in a class setting. I own a pair of nunchucks that I twirl around for fun and they are illegal here too (New York). So if you want to learn traditional weapons for fun and competition then more power to you.
As far as which weapons I would like to learn they would be nunchucks, single stick and knife. I would learn nunchucks just for fun. Stick and knife defense would be very usefull. Disarming against these weapons are practical because some guys may try to use a stick/branch/baseball bat or knife against you. Learning to use them is also practical in that although you may not carry them, you may disarm someone and now have a weapon to fight back against him or his friends.

I only said they were illegal in MA, NY, and CA because they are the ones that forbid nunchakus to even be shipped there. I'm sure you're right that a few other states ban them, but I don't believe that they are illegal in most states. It just seems so stupid to ban them. But I guess I really don't know anything past the laws of Idaho & Wyoming. Thank god i live in a conservative state. lol
