  • Combination arts with TKD

I hear a lot of people complaining about TKD and it makes me sad ahaha. Because... ithink TKD looks awesome but i hear from a lot of people that it has some big imperfections. My question is:If u combine TKD with a close up style like Hap Ki Do, or BJJ or something of that nature....would it be very effective? since u all say TKD guys suck at close range/ground....

i don't know about combining it with hapkido, cuz they are similar (but hapkido has more hand techniques) but maybe combining it with bjj...that might be a good idea. cuz tkd alone..won't get u newhere

TKD is no weaker on the ground than most traditional striking martial arts so don't let that bother you. All martial arts are missing important ranges. Look at Judo's major weaknesses, it has no striking! Nowadays the trend is to train MMA, but all that is, is the combination of several other deficient martial arts (JUST LIKE TKD IS DEFICIENT) that put together make a complete fighter by the rules of MMA.

Basically all the idiots on this forum that say even one word about how one art is better than another (A) are goddamn pussies that have never even been in a fight and would never have the guts to be in one and/or (B) ego maniacs or really insecure and trying to make themselves feel better because the more they talk about how good they or their art is the more they believe it.

It's all BS dude, don't listen to a word they say unless it's well thought out, logical and unbiased.

well im no sissie i will tell u that.and we all know that no art is perfect but there are ma's that are better suited for nowadays living. and yes judo itself isn't the best one to have alone and neither is tkd. im not knocking it. im just saying as far as arts that are closer to a real situation tkd isn't one of them. i just think that other arts need to be incorperated into it to make it a tad more practical. that's all. i just used bjj as an example..calm down.

I think it would be alot more helpful if TKD would combine with BJJ becuz if somebody gets to close to kick you can always take them to the ground and submit them or u can kick their ass if u have a good range between you and your opponent when u are standing

I have several friends that mixed TKD with other arts...

One friend mixed TKD with Wushu, iaido and boxing; his rationale is that tkd and boxing would complete his hand and feet strikes while wushu reinforces all of that. Sometimes I wonder how he juggles all three.

Another mixed TSD with Muay Thai and BJJ... again I wonder how they juggle all three.

For me, I mixed mine with hapkido and boxing I learned from my first friend. Hapkido is integrated in my school so there's no problem learning them.

Sounds like he's just been told that one of the guys here is Russian Mafia. He has a history of acking down in these circumstances.........

s - Mainstream TKD is crap. The fact that Mavis here says some people can make it work reflects on their ability to do so DESPITE it being crap. Do a good art, one that you can make work far far more easily.

Ya mainstream TKD (which coincidentally is sport style TKD) is crap, but I GARAUNTEE that if and when Muay Thai goes mainstream and becomes popular to the extent that millions of people are doing it worldwide including moms and little Jimmy..... then the majority of Muay Thai will turn to crap too.

Most people Thai Bri, do more than one art since ALL arts have holes in them, if you think Muay Thai has no holes.... well I don't know what to say. I don't remember grappling on the ground at any of the camps I trained at. Combining an art that focuses almost 100% on kicks and combining it with boxing and grappling styles is a great idea, if you've got the time..... you always talk like everyone should be in a mad rush to learn how to street fight hardcore by next week! haha, dude, alot of people dont see the rush, even though now as an experienced martial artist I do see a reason to learn effective street defence right away. I think you have to be in martial arts to realise their importance.

As for the Russians..... dude, if in the same circumstance you didnt back down you would have been a fool. You know Thailand is not safe, you beat someone up and you land up looking over your shoulder for the rest of your life, assuming you live here like I do. heh. The Thais will go back to the exact same corner just waiting to see you again to put a bullet in you. Russian mafia can't be nicer than that.

Calm down ya ninny. I'm only 'avin' a larf.......

I'm no Thai Boxer, I only took it for a while but couldn't find a decent club. I agree about ALL mainstream arts. When the motivation is profit, then instructors keep as many students as they can by making classes easier and giving out grades for jack shit.

I did a little Thai. From it I took the knees mostly, and have used them in a few real goes. I also like the elbows but, as yet, they just didn't seem to happen. At that time I had only studied Shukokai Karate, Wing Chun and Japanese Jiu Jitsu (a particularly compliancy reliant version), so Thai Boxing was easily the best art I had studied at that time, in relation to my own goals.

                              Taekwon-Do and Muay Thai

Taekwon-Do and Muay Thai are two arts that, in my opinion merge very well together. The muah Thai training will help in developing power and training in ranges that are not widely practiced in Taekwon-Do while the TKD will bring an added level of versatility.

Many kickboxers from around the world have already done this to some extent. All you really have to do is watch the K1. Most of the people who compete in that have extensive Muay Thai backgrounds or at they very least have cross trained in it to prepare. Even so, you will still see the occasional spinning back kick, spinning heel kick and the surprisingly common Axe kick. All of which while they do exist in other martial art systems are most often associated with the practice of TKD.
