  • Tang soo do or wing chun kung fu

I posted the same thing on the chineese martial arts forum but I would really like to get both opinions from people who are into korean arts and who are into chineese arts just incase of you fellas thinking why am I posting the same thing twice
    **********************************************************
I was planning on taking wing chun for it's realistic self defense teq but I didn't really like is that they only kick below the waist and I always thought it would be good to even know how to kick above the wast but what I really like is it's reflexes on the self defense and their rapid punches

As for tang soo do they say it's good for self defense and again I would like to work on my legs but they say the kicks that are practiced in TSD aren't useful when it comes to a real situation when you cant avoid a street fight and their punches isn't very good either but some say different

but on the bottom line I would like to work on my self defense especially. but I think it would be good to learn offense as well

what do you fellas think I'll be better off with?

i would take wing chun. it's quick it's effective. the reason wing chun only teaches kicking at or below the waist is b-cuz that's what works. " a kick to the head is like a punch to the foot" bruce lee
that means(to be blunt) that's it's completely useless to try and kick someone in the head cuz it's too easy to counter. i would do wing chun

It is not completely useless to kick to the head and even Bruce Lee changed his mind and decided that head kicks CAN be effective.

Most of the time low kicks are the best to use but there are times when the head is perfect to kick especially if you have the ability to kick fast and hard up high.

I would still go with Wing Chung though it is way more effective then any Korean arts except Hapkido is a pretty good art.

Korean arts used to be good but they lost their integrity. I am a Tae Kwon Do guy, but I am now interested in wing chung and other arts like systema.

I wont bad mouth either style. When you are choosing a martial art it all depends on what you want to get out of the arts. From your thread I gather that you want an art that emphasizes selfdefense.. If that is the case I wouldn't reccommend either tsd or wc. Not that they aren't good arts. I would reccommend joining a self defense class. For example Krav Maga or Defendo. If Wing Chun and Tang Soo Do are your only choices I would choose Wing Chun. I am not a big fan of it but I think it will deliver what you want. But I will tell you both of those styles will have alot of useless techniques and you will have to decipher what is legit.

i dont really know much about either, but I'm taking tang soo do. me and this one guy a black belt, were talking tonight after class, and i just brought up its overall effectiveness in real life situations. he says that it is very helpful. just about all the techniques can be put into a real life situation to some extent or another. tang soo do's main philosophy (from what i understand) is first is defense (blocking / avoiding a hit, etc) and secondly is offense. But there are some good block/counter maneuvers i've seen.

i know there are other martial arts out there who stress offense or put offense and defense together...but the way i see it in a fight, defense is way more important. doesn't matter how well you know how to hit or punch or how strong you are...if you can't avoid getting hit, sometimes one hit is all it takes.

is it possible to learn the kicks such as roundhourse kick, spining hook kick etc on my own while I take wing chun? . the problem is that tang soo do doesn't focus on upper body and wing chun doesn't focus on kicks besides sweeping that sorta thing bothers me cuz i think my legs is strong as a horse .

No, Bruce Lee is very very wise..... his movie art is Jeet Kune Do while his actual situation fight is wingchun.

                it simply means.....

in movies, Bruce will kick you to the head to impress observants.....

in true to life fights, Bruce will kick you below your waist.....

                Note:
In KungFu.... what you see is not (Illusion technique) a fist is not a fist, the whole body becomes a fist (Illusion technique) defense as an offense while offense as a defense (Illusion technique)

this is the benefits if you practicing all solid kungfu (not a fake kungfu) good if combination of 2 or more KungFu arts.

                Note:
                Absorb what is useful
                reject what is useless
add especially what is your own
(but be sure its all - solid KungFu combinations)

I didn't say Wing chun was useless. Nor do I believe it is. What I did say was there were useless techniques within the style. Which is true with most traditional martial arts.

I don't know much about Bruce Lee other than his movies and reading Tao of Jeet Kun Do. In his book, he shows a few high kicking techniques but uses them conservatively.

He studied under TKD master Jhoon Rhee. They would train and spar from time to time. From what I've read and seen, Bruce could kick at any level - high or low with tremendous speed and power.

Did you watch the Chinese connection when that gang tries to rough him up? Those kicks were no joke! Probably faster than many TKD black belts.

Oh wait I am wrong. Anyone who has viewed the JKD forum can obviously tell Bruce was a god. Just look at the way they worship him.

I know the WC guys on the forum will boo hoo at my view, but here goes.

I took WC for a year. I rejected it as being very limited and over rated.

In fact, I think I'll start a thread on that very subject.

I would say instead of paying to attend a couple classes to get a feel for it. To observe a few classes and then give it a go. Wc is not for everyone, it has its good points and its bad, so a little research on it first might give you a better idea on whether to take it or not.

about wing chun. i think if studied correctly for yrs in china could be effective. and about bruce lee we're just stating that he was the einstien of martial arts. that's all. not dissrespect, no hurtful things said, just facts
