I'm very short and always have a tough time sparring taller women with long legs...I know I should do more body shifting and get in quick and get out as fast as possible. Any more tips?ideas?

How to sparr long-legged opponents

1) When they kick get just out of range and hammer fist the top of their foot. If you want to be really mean backfist it.
2)Learn to catch the leg and take them down, that will negate alot of their weapons. Good against roundhouse.
3)Don't go in and out, go in and stay in so they can't use their legs. Then use your hand and leg (leg kicks, sweeps, etc) techniques in close.

Why not??leg kicks and knees are not only used in MT if that is what you are thinking

Geneva, If #'s 1 & 2 are outside of what's acceptable in your dojang still use #3. Don't go in and out as even if you land a hand or leg technique you're still going back out into their range, not good. Go in and stay in so they can't use their legs. Then use your hand and leg (leg checks, side kicks, back kicks, push kicks) techniques in close. Stay in your striking range and give them alot of forward pressure to get them moving back, just watch out for a spinning back kick.
Here's another way of looking at #1, When they kick get just out of range and perform a down block but instead of using the forearm use the pinky side of the fist blocking the top of their foot. See it's just a common down block from chungi, nothing nasty.

Thanks!
Good advice but in those tournaments sweeps, takedowns etc are not allowed even though I get to sparr people that practice other types of martial arts.
I do TKD yeah, no kicks below the belt...
Keep the good tips coming!
Thanks you guys rock!

To spar people how have longer reach you need to get inside.
Backing out is not a good idea, because you can score when you are out of range and to score you will have to pass through their range to get to yours.
So Try to work on footwork and evading. Then when they move block and counter and move inside and stay there till you score. Then do it again.
I like a jump kick to the face right off the line when they judge says go. It used to work even on very good people in tournaments when I used to compete.
Learn to shield with your leg, it slows down others kicking

i can only say last time i got beaten by someone smaller was cuz he used a "naeryo chagi" (if that's spelled correctly) from a very close range, my defense wasn't very good ;(
he did it from a very close range ^^
also "big" ppl like me like to direct their kicks to the head (2 points yey ^^) but i don't know if that's the same overthere ^^
so make sure to keep ur defense high enough
