You're right on, Tom Yum. I did a lot of roundhouse kicking with koshi, but wasn't able to bring my knee up near as high as a more traditional (at least for me) roundhouse. At my school, I do all my standup in the tennis shoes I usually wear, which helps to separate what works best for me with them on. I also tend to want to close distance, and use what is usually my greater knowledge of grappling and clinch work to my advantage. I find myself at a distinct disadvantage trying to fight a kicker in his comfort zone. I use shin kicks as a means to close space and help neutralize taking a kick from someone who knows a lot more about kicking, but less about most other things.

I am referring to sparring all out in the gym. Your heart races and you get the adrenaline dump, so you might be able to power through a couple of shots unless they knock you down.
When you get up the next morning, that's when the pain sets in.

Bruises
I've had huge bruises set in a day or two after training from contact that I didn't realize I took. I just lets me know that my intensity and focus was in the right place.

Areas of my body where I have had serious injuries, Right shoulder and left leg, bruise up a lot later than any where else. I think it's due to less circulation to those areas. Or it could be from gettiong old, remember, we don't understand what 15 year olds are doing. LOL
