  • Why is TKD retarded?

Okay, I started taking TKD recently, and am shocked at its inability to be applied in a real fight. It breaks the number one rule of fighting, kicks. Kicking is good maybe to the shins and sometimes low abdomen, but come on. I would like for every TKD person to go pick a fight and try to kick them in the head or chest, and post how long it takes the other person to take you down and mash your cookie dough. kick after kick after kick, possible takedown openings after possible takedown openings. Its just down-right sickening. the worst part about it is i am stuck in the class for 4 more months. the coarse was titled as KARATE, praying it was shorin ryu okinawan karate, I got in it. but lucky for me, it turned out being one of the most commercialized, least effective MA's on the planet. wait, I just thought of a new goal.......to see how BAD i can become at fighting over the next four months, then I will kill myself.

Just ask to spar the instructor without any style based rules... simple as that, see if you win, if not hes got something to teach you, and if you dont want to do that, just ask questions like "and how would this work in self defense"... and laugh at him squirming to answer.

it is a college coarse, so i know he wouldn't spar with me. but asking the questions would be funny, he doesn't talk to me, but if he does ask for my opinion ever, i will have to say something.

sirmattu, continue kicking to the head in a fight. if that works for you, fine. All i was saying is if you miss, you create a huge opening. I have seen high kicks work, but most of the time the opponent was so tired he couldn't move, or the match didn't allow submissions. any fresh, wrestling/submission based fighter would gain the advantage in a high, especially jumping, kick situation.

In conclusion, i am an idiot and what this really boils down to is me pissing some people off.

well buckle-nuts, you have successfully shown me your level of retardation. I said in a previous post that kicks to the head can be effective, but it is in a match that doesnt allow grappling.....such as K-1, you complete turd. your parents hate you.

hahaha, i second this. You should call the cops and tell them about the guy who has the gun to your head forcing u to do the ma. Holy crap!!! if u dont like it so much and u seem to have figured everything out about fighting then why do it. Hell why do any ma's.
And kicking being the no. 1 fighting rule?? please tell me what encyclopedia u got this from.

but it is in a match that doesnt allow grappling.....
you eva heard of cro cop, bas rutten(hes a second degree tkd blackbelt) , vochanchyn, chuck lidell? gilbert yvel?, sakuraba?(and hes beaten the best grapplers. the gracies) the list goes on.....they all use kicks.

i take this class because it is worth 1 credit hour, and without it, i would only have 11, making me a part-time student, instead of a full time student. then i wouldnt be able to stay on my parents insurance. it was the only MA class open, and by the time i found out what it was really all about, it was too late to get my money back for the class, and their still wouldnt be any other openings in the other classes. so i am just going to keep going so he doesnt fail me.

Well then at least go into it for the next couple of months with an open mind and not a negative attitude. I mean it does depend on the instructor and how he teaches you, but you will soon learn what kicks are right for what situations. At the end of the day even if u still are totally against kicks and vow never to use them, least you know worst comes to worst you can.

TKD is allright. I wouldn't say its retarded, but people do it for a lot of different reasons. Sometimes they just wanna learn a little bit of self-defense and mostly stay in shape with an interesting hobby. Some TKD schools can be very successfull because they appeal to this. Not everyone is comfortable with contact sparring or grappling on the ground.

The people who want to learn how to fight and do study TKD will inevitably become good fighters. If they train hard and get in rounds of sparring, they will be able to hold their own. If they are modern sport TKD guys they will have to cross train in boxing or jujitsu to make up for lack of hand techniques and grappling.

Some old-school TKD guys can fight; both American and Korean guys but their style is maybe 60% kicking 40% hand techniques (TOTALLY different than modern sport TKD) and they use alot of grappling from hoshinsul or hapkido. These guys are tough and they can fight. They also come from different Korean martial arts backgrounds and have fought on real battlefields, sometimes helping American soldiers.

Kicks to the head are plenty effective on a normal guy; if you are well-conditioned with jet-fast kicks that have power, and you take on Joe Schmoe, chances are you can kick him in the head and knock him out easy.

If you are like this however and take on a skilled MMA fighter, then be careful and only kick low.

Also, if you are said TKD fighter and go into one of those biker bars where the guys have arms thicker than most people's thighs, I wouldn't take on them with high kicks either

i agree with you completely. that is my whole problem with tkd. i dont want to have to worry about who i get into a fight with for my technique to work. i am considering some MT after this class is over, that is what most people cross train with their wrestling/submissions.
