  • Difference Soo Bahk Do & Tang Soo Do

What is the difference between Soo Bahk Do- muk do kwan and tang soo do muk do kwan.

I once studied tsd years back and the club I was with changed its name to sbd. The grand master stayed the same as did the moo do Kwan System reference. I found however new forms did appear that emphasised Chinese internal breathing more (tai chi like)

Can anyone help explain the difference

Difference Between Soo Bahk Do & Tang Soo Do

There is no real difference. Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan and Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan are the style. When Moo Duk Kwan founder Hwang Kee first started teaching martial arts in 1945 he named his art Hwa Soo Do. In 1947 he remaned the art Tang Soo Do. I first heard of the term Soo Bahk Do in 1995, but according to most "experts", Hwang Kee renamed Tang Soo Do to Soo Bahk Do in 1957 after he had discovered an ancient Korean text call the "Moo Yei Tong Bo Ji".

The Moo Yei Tong Bo Ji is a A 17th century manuscript consisting of 4 volumes that defines the war fighting experiences of the regional armies. The Moo Yei Tong Bo Ji includes 1 volume titled Kwon Bup which appears to be hand fighting techniques used in many of today's martial arts. It also mentions Soo Bahk techniques and includes pictures and explanations.

Hwang Kee added Soo Bahk to Tang Soo Do in preparation for changing the name of his style to only Soo Bahk Do. Tang Soo Do was removed and Hwang Kee's style is now called Soo Bahk Do. Hwang Kee added many Hyung derived from the 300 year old book, the Moo Yei Do Tong Bo JI. These new Hyung would eventually replace some of the "classical" Korean (actually Okinawan) forms.

I hope this is of some help.
