  • Ankle Problems

I stopped doing TKD for about 2 months after going really hard for a year(forth year into it) durring that period i sprained my ankle really bag

    Sub Story

I was at my church youth group, and we were playin this game and i tryed to jump through a door and my ankle went funny when i jumped. When i landed it hurt like crazy, then his big 240 pound guy stepped on it because it was dark.

I have gone to physio, and it is ok to walk on now. But turning kicks have just been killing me. I train the MT round house on my heavy bag to train my shins and i can do it fine. But those high turning kicks that put pressure on your ankle just kill me.

This is more a story than a question. Time heals, but i get so boarded waiting. Anyone ever had a really bad ankle sprain that never really went away?? Anything helped the pain, helped it heal.

    Respectfully,

    Jonathan

I might be able to help you here if you answer these two questions.

    1. Which foot hurts when you kick? The foot your standing on or the foot kicking?

    2. Which part of the ankle hurts? Is it around the outside or near the instep or the back? Does it still ache somewhat when you walk?

I might be able to help you because I had a very similar injury recently myself.

foot i am kicking with(right). it hurts lateral side, and on the back. When i rotate my ankle it feels really tight and crackles alot. As for walking sometimes about twice a week. but when i get it warmed up a bit that pain goes away. I also find when i train it is a lot easier to sprain it while running, just by having it go to the side.

Judging by what you've said your problem does in fact sound like a very recent problem of mine, in the British TKD open my left leg came underneath too far forwards during a kick, and ecause if you lose your balance during a match you lose points, I just landed on it rather heavily.

After seeing one of my teachers about it (he's a sports physiotherapist), he said that there are three small bones which are designed to spread out any pressure that the central ball joint in your ankle comes into contact with like when one runs or in this case kicks. What I had done was to exert too much pressure on only one of these particular bones which resulted in a bruised bone and some swelling.

Check your ankles by comparing them if one looks a bit puffier than the other, than you probably have done the same thing as me but perhaps to a different one of the three bones.

        His remedy was:

1.) To reduce the swelling apply an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas or some such, or 10 mins and then apply a hot water bottle to the area for 10 minutes, fo about an hour. This will flush out all the excess fluid by increased blood circulation.

2.) Try not to put too much pressure on the ankle and always make sure whenever you run or walk your foot does the natural heel to ball of the foot to toes movement, in order to decrease the length of bruising on the bone, the ice pack and hot water will help this too.

It worked for me, I hope it helps you!

Sounds like possible ligament damage, better see a doctor

Yeah it does sound like ligament damage. I once popped the tendon behind my ankle and make it go to the front side of my ankle. I had to wear an air splint for awhile finally one day when grappling several months later, somebody rolled over my foot and it popped back into place. Pain immediately stopped.

Did you see a sports doctor or a regular doctor?

Granted I only had one experience with a PT(physical therapist) and turning that into a generalization is far more than a stretch, but in my experience a PT is more knowledgable and experienced than a doctor about these things.

Took a few seconds and they knew what was wrong, they see this kinda stuff every day.

And excessive...that's the most incredible case of dumb luck I've ever heard of.
