  • tkd is effective if done right

how can people say tkd is ineffective after watching something like this. a couple people get knocked out, and they are prepared for kicks to be coming at them. thats a large part of tkd. not only are you using your legs to be effective, but your also countering at the same time. lets say for example if you were in a street fight, because for some reason everyone thinks that tkd wouldnt work in a street fight, you were to kick someone. first you would have shoes on. shoes hurt. even a semi powerful turn kick would hurt without shoes if done right. obviously no one on these forums have been kicked in the head. it hurts. tkd kicks are very effective. even the flashy ones. people misconstrude flashy kicks with catching the opponent off gaurd. a kick with multiple spins and variations will keep him guessing. most of you people have no idea what your talking about when it comes to kicks from what ive seen on these forums. with a well placed kick you could really get messed up. if you have ever been kicked by a legitimite tkd practitioner, you would giver credit were credit is due. i agree with some who say that its a weak martial art, but its only because they havnt seen any real practioners. if you were to go to my dojang, theres some guys that are f-in crazy. some of them do olympic tkd. so the majority of people who say tkd is dumb, either have never been kicked in the head before, or have seen some kid show bad examples of how its used with his camo belt or rainbow belt, whatever you guys wear.

i've knocked out people with tkd kicks. But people will make up their own minds about whats right for them.

Try not to let it bother you.

those guys have awesome kicks, and alot of people got brutally ko'd. however i also noticed that many of the kos could have been avoided, if only the guy had his hads up. how come those guys dont protect their faces when facing such hard kicks coming at their heads constantly? is it agaisnt the rules or something? i mean, those knockouts were hardcore, one guy even got his nose broken by an axe kick, so why would they be so lax about protecting their faces? their hands were always down, or out to the sides. leaving your head unprotected and your chin untucked and exposed when multiple strikes are coming at you is all bad.

I've done a fair amount of TKD and I know it gets bashed a lot on various forums. I agree that the kicking power CAN be devastating, but I also think the hand technique (or lack of it) in sparring is a valid criticism.

One style I was in featured Olympic-style sparring but you could punch to the body. I think that's WAY better for developing hand techniques. I'm sure it's not as effective as boxing, muay thai, etc. for hand strikes.

I was a decent fighter and won some tournaments, but I was never a believer in the so-called flashy kicks. I always stuck to front kick, side kick, and roundhouse kick. I learned a lot of flashy ones but I honestly don't think I could pull one of those off in a street fight. Just my humble opinion.

Honestly, its the power house corporations like Tiger Schulmans that kill TKD. No real fighter wants to go to a place that promises better grades in school and help with ADD. Personally, TKD in KOREA is awesome. My korean friend is awesome as hell at TKD but he said it was intense, not training in a strip mall next to a pizzeria.

Hahaha, I like how a "Mattbla" is now a general insulting term on this forum. That's hilarious to me.

As to the video...my guess as to why they don't protect their faces is because adopting a boxing/mt style of guard would interfere somewhat with the kicking. I'm sure in a different situation, they would hold their hands up. Any TKD guys out there who can confirm/correct this?

As to why TKD is so often ridiculed...part of it is the very soft training style that seems to be prevalent in many U.S. schools. Part of it is the fact that TKD is primarily a kicking art, and many people, myself included, feel that kicking should only be a small part of a fighter's arsenal.

But then again, it looked like some of those guys could have kicked me in the head six times before I could blink. I wouldn't laugh at them.

                              These arguments are ridiculous.

CLOONEY your supposes and what ifs and guess work is not helping make TKD look good. Posts like yours just make it look worse, you have no idea what you are talking about. The way you post sounds like wishful thinking and just makes TKD look silly. While you are guessing, the rest of us are living it man. Dont post like that. If you have real life experience about something than post it to support your argument, DONT GIVE OPINIONS based on what you THINK may happen. AND Tan01 DIDNT threaten you, sheesh, go back and read his small post, he didnt threaten you.

MUAYTHAIGUY, The WORST TKD in the world can be found in KOREA. They are the creators of the MCDOJO (or MCDOJANG)

TKD is ridiculed because 80% of our students are little kids and middle aged parents, Im sorry but we do not portray a hard core tough image when only a small fraction of our students are hard core. AND we are ridiculed in part due to the jealousy we garner for being so big and making so much money. The trade off of course is that we are big and making money due to all the kids and middle aged parents.
