  • Hapkido Tournaments

Hey, guys. I was messing around on youtube the other day and I came across some clips of hapkido tournaments in Korea. It's not full matches, just a few highlights but they look kinda interesting.

I can't quite tell what the rules are but it looks like standard TKD tournaments with throwing techniques. I'm not sure if they can punch to the head or not but the gloves they are wearing are pretty large. Here are the links to the videos:

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Anyone ever competed in anything like this, Hapkido tournaments specifically? I'm kinda interested in the rules.

    Close.

I've competed in open-style tournaments with very similar rules.

i know i wouldn't have got caught with any of those head kicks, didn't realise hapkido has become bad TKD.

What were the rules at those tournaments, Tom? Were punches to the head allowed? They competitors in those touraments were wearing what looked like boxing gloves or something similar in size.

Competing under rules like that looks like it takes more of a toll on the body than a hard kickboxing match the way those guys are getting swept and falling on each other.

I do too. Very dynamic stuff and exciting to watch. I'd like to find some full tournaments on tape or on the web.

Damn!!! Old man got some pimp juice.

All of the throwing sequences were quite beautiful... there was a striking sequence not far from the beginning of the clip that looked a little hard to believe but the throws and submissions were beautiful.

This looks like Sanshou, and is really a watered down version of the art. A real Hapido tournament using proper Hapkido techniques would be more like UFC or Pride. However this footage is definitely dynamic and fun to watch.

Depends, there generally seems to be two different schools in Hapkido. One is more Aiki orientated, the other tends to be more Jujitsu in appearance.

Here is a list of rules, in case anybody still needs them.

Yes, Hapkido is basically TKD with a bit of judo and jiu-jitsu. I think most traditional Hapkido torunaments allow for throws depending on the division, but I haven't competed in quite a long time

Bollocks. Hapkido is nothing like TKD. Any Hapkido club you find that teaches basically TKD with a bit of Judo and Ju jutsu is not Hapkido at all. Hapkido varies from club to club but is much more in common with Japanese Ju jutsu or Aikijutsu than anything else. Hapkido striking is more practical than the fancy flicky TKD stuff, they migh be both from Korea but they're hardly similar.
