Agreed... I've seen some footage of the kuk sool won tournaments that they hold in South Korea. I can sum it up in two words: "Point!!! ...Judges...?"

At least in the SK Hapkido Tournaments it's full contact.

hmm that was an interesting clip. hapkido actually looks like a pretty decent and dynamic art.

they did alot of pretty nutty shit, and some of it worked pretty well. some were disasters though. i dont know about those spins moves, they cause ssome guys to straight up spin out of control and land on their ass

some of those guys were pretty slick though and some had some good throws, so props to them.

were those guys trying to really show off or is that how hapkido generally is? whats with all the spin moves? anyone know?

Yeh Maxx I openingly agree, they are pretty shite, however at our surrounding schools we do not train and spar like that, its an independent choice we have made. The difference is i can accept the faults in my art whilst you go on the defense (rather ironically due to the evidence in that clip) of your clip. Oh and depending on the rank will differ on how KSW students spar. Could i see the clips please? PM me them.

Its quite plain to see that just holding a simple boxing guard would stop 99% of those kicks. Any decent MT, San Shou, kickboxer, boxer etc. stylist would have destroyed everyone of those fighters because the guards were lack luster.

I thought that the clip was an incredibly convincing reason NOT to do that version of Hapkido.

Not one of those high kicks took the opponent out. Only a few even landed. And, what's worse, is this - almost every person who tried to do one of those impressive looking kicks ended up on his arse! And that's in a competition designed to facilitate their use! In a real fight they may as well just bang their own heads into the floor and have done with it.

Oh, and by the way, I am a muay thai instructor with years of experience. I have fought and I have trained and trained with amateur and semi-pro fighters. A lot of what was in that clip is flashy but it is also only highlights. I don't know what a full match would look like, but I like what I saw which is a great deal of athleticism, speed and a willingness to try dynamic movements under full contact rules.

If i held my guard and walked forward i would have been able to block EVERY ONE of those high kicks. The reason why the sparring is how it is AT THE MOMENT is because of the insurance costs, KSW is still relatively small and is growing rapidly hense why it can't afford any better at the tourny. I opening admit that, but you see to ignorant to read my posts and take it into account. you didn't even address it in your post!!!!
