  • So, what IS the difference?

Anyhow, a lady of Asian origin walked into our Dojang this morning, wanting some info. We are in the Boonies, not literaly but not much diversity, so our sign reads *Karate* but we are indeed a TKD school.

Dangit, the lady knew there was a difference But what is the difference other than technical terms. I mean, with a bazillion TKD styles, I am sure Karate is no different. There is nothing else in town, not counting the Yoshika guy at the fitness club - he was less than accommodating, actually outright rude to one of our kids wanting to do something else.

    Research

If you would go online and research the histories of these 2 arts, you will note major differences.

Both arts were developed by two different cultures. And the similarities may come from the fact that Japan landed troops on Korea many times.

Do a little research into your art, it's always helpful and respectful.

LOL! I am aware of the cultural aspect, sure, but how can you in a minute or two explain all of that, when you have bazillions of styles in TKD (and hardly any agree on more than the principal name!) and probably a similar situation in Karate?

I was flabbergasted that this lady pinned us down on the difference! ( I hope she comes back to train with us! ) Almost everybody goes to *Karadee* around here...

the main diffrence, karate takes longer to train and study, tkd 70% of using legs, its all about legs legs legs, if i would see a guy only kicking in martial art i would presume he is tkd, even tho there is a chance it could be something else...

Btw someone mentioned japan in korea, it was in fact Korea was under the Japan teritory from 1910 - 1945 so long time to practice karate and make tkd,..

oh yea i cheked on my TKD club i train now ill translate it:

Main diffrence in karate and tkd:

Even that in karate and tkd are using almost same hits and blocks, its the main diffrence that in karate are used longer and harder stances (i think its translated like this), and there is more hand art then in tkd, for tkd is welll known that its fast legs, atractive leg hits and even in tkd there is used faster and shorter stances .....

Well i hope i translated it good, man not being in school for one year does not help lol At least i did translate

Btw when i said saw, i was wrong:

        See
        Whats here?
        Seen

In the past I've had people come in to the school I was training at and inquire about the differences between TKD and other arts. Like the person that came into your school, most people are curious about the differences between TKD and karate.

Without getting too technical, I think the best thing to tell them is that TKD emphasizes kicking over most other elements. There are standing kicks, skipping kicks, jumping kicks, flying kicks, sliding kicks, etc. Karate does not have the same large variety of kicking techniques that TKD has.

Also that TKD is more effective at greater distances than karate is. It's generally considered a long range art. Karate is usually more effective in a closer range due to a larger portion of their techniques being done with the hands.

Aside from that TKD has similar techniques and execution to what you would find in shotokan karate... of course that also depends on your TKD background as well.

lol, I am so going to do that.

know what annoys me beyond belief? when people ask, "Lindsey, how is your karate training going?"

              = me

You are lucky - oh, wait, it was a mother....never mind!

I was hoping the lady would return. But my time in the Dojang had to be curbed and it seems like she wanted to give the Japanese style a go first...
