Hey guys, just found out about this forum. I currently train Capoeira and have had increasing interest in TKD as well. The problem is that there are so many TKD places around here. I can think of 10 within a 5-10 minute drive. And most seem to be geared towards little kids who need some confidence. I want to steer clear from any sort of belt factory, McDojo, or WTF/olympic style, etc. So I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for me, thanks!

Ah.
(My geography is off...I kept thinking Florida...my bad)
There are a few ITA schools down that way. I like the curriculum, not just pure sport but also some Self Defense techniques thrown in, traditional, but not dusty...
Of course it depends on the instructor...
If non is near, I think ATA would be good as well.
But since you are lucky enough to have a choice...see if you can try a few of them out before you commit!

Well, here are my choices of schools.
ATA affiliated school locally. I took a couple classes. They teach traditional TKD.
Our Kids Martial Arts, Karate and Martial Arts programs are excellent choices for self defense, discipline and fitness. Learn more about our martial arts classes in South Orange County now!
Traditional and WTF
Learn Taekwondo in Laguna Niguel's best Taekwondo school. We offer children, teen and adult programs. Fitness and discipline for the mind and body.
This place seemed to interest me the most. Just because it seemed the least hokey. Plus it's right down the street.
We teach a mixture of traditional Taekwondo and Olympic Style Taekwondo. We
are inline with the WTF, USA Taekwondo and the CTA.
I emailed the rest of the places but haven't gotten a response. I know you can't tell much about a school from the website, but let me know what you guys think! Any other questions I should be asking?

How long the instructors have been with the program...First Aid certification. instructor certification...with whom they train with to stay sharp...
Do you want to do tournaments...just learn...you know...ask the things that are important to you.

there's a great school in Costa Mesa called Orange County TaeKwonDo, if that's in your area. The teachers are really great guys and focus more on self-defense tkd than point-tournament stuff. One of them is pretty versatile and knowledgeable in several martial arts and their prices are the cheapest in that area. their # is 714-979-6400
