  • Board breaking, who uses it?

Our system requires board breaking. I'm not a fan of it but it's not that big of a deal. My students seem to do well with it and no major injuries.
What are your board breaks like.

I have broken six boards 12"X12"x1" No spacers with a side kick and jump reverse side kick.

2 boards of the same dimensions no spacers with a punch, hammer fist, knife hand, ridgehand, upset knife hand and backfist.

    I also broke a 12"x12"x2" with a palm heel.

Front kick and round kick 3 boards 12"X12"x1" no spacers.

Spacers make it easier. I love watching people at demos breaking half inch boards with spacers and the persons says how difficult they are.

Anyway what type of board breaking do you do?

We do a fair amount of breaking in the ITF, it's always 12x12x1 pine boards with no spacers.

My best breaks were 5 boards ridge hand, 5 boards knifehand and 8 boards turning sidekick but we had a board holding machine for the turning sidekick. People can usually only hold 6 boards maximum without a machine.

There's some pics of me doing a bunch of different breaks including the ridgehand and knifehand ones on my website at www.honourtkd.com if you wanted to see excessiveforce. Go to the photos - Mr. Mavis - Mr. Mavis showing off section.

We use poly boards. Every strike I use is capable of breaking the boards, i.e. it is required to break a board with every strike.

This demonstrates that I can strike any target with any one of my strikes and not hurt myself.

Try using one of your strikes on someone forehead and see who gets hurt!

Yes sir. It will be the hittee.

Allow me to rephrase my statement and break it down for the dim among us.

We have a repetoire of strikes.

We hit soft targets such as bags, mounted makiwara, and each other.

We hit hard targets such as the walls, the structural beams, and the poly breaking boards, oh... and each other.

Every strike I have been trained to use I can use against the bags, the boards and the freakin' 12 by 12 oak support beams that hold up the ceiling.

Yeah, sometimes is stings like a mother, but I have yet to hurt my hands or feet using correct technique in full speed striking.

To digress even further, we don't punch like boxers or kenpoists, we don't do spear finger death strikes and we don't kick with the shins.

Every point of contact we use to strike is padded with tendon or muscle or both and is a naturally occuring impact absorbant point on the body.

Does that explain things for you or do you need a shot to the forehead?

You know the part I hate the most? Holding the stinkin' boards!
And as one of the "big guys", I ALWAYS wind up holding the stinkin' boards!! How do you hold boards for someone trying to break six boards with no spacers with a spinning back kick and not wind up flat on your butt? Oh yeah sure we'll just have Mike here brace your shoulders from behind. OK everybody, let's line up and KICK!!

Holding boards is probably a more intense wok-out than breaking boards!

Spanky, if you're only hitting with tendons and muslce, I'll take the shot to the forehead. It sounds very relaxing.

I broke a board just last night. I was coming out of the grocery store and noticed it standing over in the dark looking at me. As I proceeded to my car I noticed it was following me. I didn't know what to do so I turned around and asked the board what it was doing following me.........it said nothing, just stood there.......I knew that it was either me or the board so I let out a loud "kiaaaa" and threw a picture perfect knife hand chop.

Next thing I knew the confrontation was over. The board lay there broken and beaten and I walked away without a scratch. Thank God for all those long hours spent learning how to defend myself against a board. If it would not have been for the training I surely would have been in trouble.

And a cheery "FUKE" YOU! right back atcha, you worthless, uneducated useless, insignificant, base, little piece of bleeding hemorrhoidal rectal slime!

(see that, not one single profanity and I was still able to express my feelings fairly effectively)

BTW - Just what do you consider to be active participation in a martial arts school (whatever the style)? When your instructor asks you to do something you may not like, do you just simply refuse?

You know I hear all these people talking about how many trees we use every year on stuff like furniture and paper. I bet we could save alot of trees if we would just quit cutting down the ones we plan on processing just so we can hit them.

I mean really think about this one. We go and cut down a tree and then do all this work to make it into a bunch of little boards that gets shipped off to TKD schools around the world. What do they do with this precious resource you ask......They hit it one time and then throw it in the garbage......LOL.

Maybe it's just me, but that just sounds crazy. Maybe we could just bring everyone out to the tree before it's cut down and let them chop on it there so we don't waste it. Maybe we could find something else to break like when it comes time to test you can take the whole class out to the parking lot at the local mall and punch out peoples car windows or something.

At the nation tournament they would bring in truck loads of pine boards, the stack would be say 10 feet high and well over 200 feet long. Makes a tremendous mess. But a few years ago the switch to the rebrakeable plastic boards.

They suck, they are harder than real boards, the break slow so it usually stings a lot more than real boards. and you have to be extremely acurate.

But we do save the trees.
