  • Axe Kicks? What the Heck are they good for?

What exactly would you use and axe kick for (aside from the obvious "Hit the other guy" awnser)? It seems like a move that takes a really long time to do, so why would you use it in a full on street fight (if you would use it, I know next to nothing about tkd.)?

Why does it take a long time to execute? You mean it takes YOU a long time? Because I can pull this kick off very fast. My advice to anyone that can't do any given technique lightning fast should just not use that technique period.

The worst injury in my school was from an axe kick. 2 of my redbelts were going at it and one of them brought an axe kick down with absolutely no control on the face of his opponent. His opponent was very stocky so he didn't move away from the kick but rather took the full brunt of it and his face around his eye swelled up like a balloon and turned an ugly purple within a minute. He went to the hospital and they told him his cheek bone was cracked but that they couldn't really do anything about it and that it would heal fine.... a couple of weeks later he noticed his eye was sinking into his head so he went back and got surgey to have a plate put into his face to hold his head together.

    That sucked.

I've seen this kick on TV used in pro Muay Thai matches in North America to good effect.

My friend got into a fight outside a bar and used this kick on the back of someones head when they were bent over from getting hit in the gut a second earlier, knocked him right out.

The only reason I like this kick is it is hard to read so often gets to it's target without being blocked.

I like them. One of the few kicks that still works after the torn hamstrings.

Don't know if I'd use it as an opener but it is a good closer.

Axe kick is good against side kick. you can brush away the side kick and then bam....

I used to love this kick when I was first into Karate. But, luckily for me, we were all trained NOT to catch each others legs. Catching a leg like this would make the kicker pretty vulnerable.

Hmmm I didn't see the pro Muay Thai fighters catch this kick with anything but their FACE. Maybe someone should have trained them NOT to catch this kick.

Sure if your mission in life is to flatten your face one kick at a time. Heh I don't know how many times I've joked about people that need to stop blocking with their face.

I wonder why this topic of mine has gotten so many more hits than my other thread?

Yeah, but they could give you a nasty nip on your ankle with the remains of their broken teeth.

Only a true master can execute the dreaded broken teeth nip technique.

If i recall correctly, Andy Hug was the only person in K-1 to have sucess with the Axe kick.. And he did use it pretty well...

Actually all the k-1 fights I have seen were pretty boring(I have only seen a couple.) I really didn't see anything very impressive. They had very little action and it seemed the guys didn't even know how to throw combinations. Could have just been the ones that i have seen. But it was a championship.

let me put it this way... If you are a heavyweight Kicboxer, Kartaka, MTer with any talkent then you will go to K-1. No other promotion pays more than K-1.. Heck they give over 60 thousand dollars for winning the grand prix
