Good strategy jubaji. I will try them out tomorrow at the D&B(death and blind). As i have wrote in the other post, I have a nasty habit of shooting too far away and taking a small step back with my rear leg before i shoot. How do i know when I'm in good range to shoot?

I always shoot at armslength but they sprawl out on me though. Do you mean arms length as in if i can touch them if my arms were straight or if i can touch them when they are bent?

The closer, the better. Just consider an extended arm as the very outside of your range. Pay attention to what you do in practice. Are you stepping back when lowering your level? A lot of people do that at first, and it makes defending pretty easy. If so, you can do some exercises to help break the habit. In practice, force yourself to plant your following leg somewhere before you shoot. Push off from it, but don't allow yourself to move it until you have made your penetration step. This will be awkward at first, but will help break your habit. If you are still not making good penetration, try moving this 'point' closer to your opponent before you shoot, and you can start getting used to shooting from a closer range. Don't do this in a match, as it will compromise mobility, but try it as an exercise temporarily to change your habits.

thanks guys.
I have seen some people shoot in and lift up the other guy on their shoulders and drop them and I've seen them pick them up on their shoulders, stand up and hten slam them into the ground. How do you do this?

Personally, i believe that imagination plays a big part in getting better at everything. There is nothing a good imagination can't do. In this case, wrestling, imagination helps to think about moves and logically how they would work. Just my 2 cents.
Well I got the gist of the takedown now, thanks for all your help guys! Btw jubaji, i'm 140 pounds now. Booya.

1. (when standing) keep your hands on top of his and look for an underhook . . . damn I just realized how tough this is to explain verbally lol. Basically it's a good way to control their arms or at least keep them from getting the clinch they want on you.
2. Remember the "tap the forehead then shoot?" Try this: tap upward under their chin to make them look up. Don't friggin uppercut the dude (even though the humor value never ceases from it), but just enough to make him look up. You can't sprawl effectively when looking up, so it'll probably give you the vital few extra inches deeper on your shot to pull it off.
3. See if you can get your opp. to walk a pattern. I'm able to get some guys to walk a circle with me, and while we're circling, I notice their feet. As soon as they cross, shoot. They won't have an effective a sprawl when feet are closer like that.
These aren't the "end all be all" of shot setups, but I've found from experience rolling that they help out (better than nothing), and I'm increasing with effectiveness the more I try these techniques out and mix 'em up.
good luck!
Best regards,

I'll try some of those set ups, thanks.
Lemme tell a story.
We(the wrestling team) were in the wrestling room fooling around waiting for the bus to come(we had a match). My friend needed to lose weight so he wanted me to wrestle with him a bit.
He was wearing 8 shirts 3 pairs of pants, 3 pairs of socks, and a ghetto cap with the hood from the sweater over it.
We started circling around a bit, then a brilliant idea struck me. I tapped him in the head a couple of times then grabbed the top of his ghetto cap and sweater hood and pulled it down across his face so he couldn't see. Then i shot in and slammed him. the end

There is a guy at my juju club that worked out with a wrestler for a year. He doesn't come often, and he's one of those guys that doesn't understand technique or 50%.... anyway. I am probably one of the best at stand-up in my club but I can't take him down using shots. Occasionally, I get lucky and sprawl and move to his back, but he usually gets in deep on me quick.
Two questions (this is more wrstling than jiu-jitsu)...
1. How can I make my sprawl-reaction time faster? Each millisecond counts, this guy has a superb shot.
2. He sprawls fast, is there anyway I can take advantage of that against him? I am thinking about shooting in just deep enough to where he begins to sprawl then quickly going around and getting his back.
or should I just try to keep him in a clinch? I have never seen him do anything out of a clinch, and mine improves daily....
