No, no. You're entitled to your opinion, and frankly its much safer for young folks not to lose too much weight. I realize that. But, I would like to know how many folks, including yourself, put on weight and were more successful in your wrestling experience ('success' measured in championships, not healthy self-esteem ). I've known people who have done so, but they are in the great minority. Just curious.
p.s. I'm pretty confident about winning this bet, as I can wait until the end of his entire wrestling career, and if he loses so much as a few pounds---I win! Assuming he doesn't puss-out and quit, I've got a good shot.
Well, I'm confident that in one point in his life the scale will be a few pounds lighter too, but I think his net weight will still be higher, hehe.
Actually, a lot of the people I know personally who are lean and still wrestle, and do so successfully, are gym addicts, and love to pack on muscle. That's actually how I keep in touch with them, at the gym.
As far as my wrestling career goes...it's as simple as low GPA. My coach had really high hopes for me, and offered me money to do well in school and wrestle for him. (It was only $50) I was ineligible a lot, and my priorities were in this order: cigarettes, girls, alcohol, pot, ... , wrestling, .... , church, ...., school. I ended up having to go to Independent High School, where we had no sports, so I was never able to finish up my wrestling career. I learned how to wrestle enough for it's street practicality, because in HS I always was "preparing" for a fight, that usually never happened.
Luckily, I ended up graduating early [and i quit smoking, yay!], b/c the credit requirement at Independent was only 3/4 of regular school. I took an IQ test, was inspired, and am now an honor student in college that will attend Med. School in a couple years. So, in the end things turned out OK. If I would have applied myself in school I would have almost definately had plently of scholarship money and would have started college earlier. But I believe that things happen for a reason. If I was off at like Harvard or something I wouldn't have met my current fiance, and I would still be in the computer science field You see, sometimes being a screw up can be a good thing

It's definately 5 lbs of muscle buddy. Most of it is probably in your legs. It isn't water, and knowledge doesn't pack on the lbs. either
wow, this is a huge effing thread.......anyways im very new to the ground game (about five months of 5-7 times a week) and i have realized that my take downs need help *understatement* and was wondering if any of you could give me some ideas on how to work on them. also, do any of you by any chance know of any wrestling clubs (real wrestling not those homosexual ones i keep finding on the net) in the LA area. none of the colleges around here have wrestling programs that i can find. we dont do much stand up sparring in my school and i really want to work on it. thanks in advance.

Do you hesitate when you shoot? I noticed most people who were having problems with their takedowns usually were "unsure" of their shot's like yourself, and would not commit themselves to the takedown. When you hesitate, it's all over. Commit hard, fast, and be AGGRESSIVE!
Jubaji can probably help you out too...
P.S. What aspects of your takedown are you having problems with? Which takedowns, etc.

Well, hold on now. The kid may be still growing, so I think overall his weight will tend to go up. My position is that he will deliberately lose weight to wrestle at a weight class that gives him the greatest opportunity to win.

And you were in high school? I'm pretty sure that's illegal!

JUDO, JUDO, JUDO! Judo is mostly stand-up grappling, lots of throws and footsweeps. It would help your JuJu (I take it you do BJJ) a whole lot. I doubt most JuJu guys know a whole lot of Judo, and trust me, a good throws hurts like a Mo' Fo'.
If you are in high school, do wrestling. If not, I don't know, but try to find a Judo club.
As for the shot/drop-step, I can't explain it over the net. There are 100 ways to do it, and each of the 100 has to be done perfectly.
My favorite attack is.... Well I can't tell you cuz it's a secret.

For good takedowns you need of course technique, but importantly confidence, committment and proper setup. The setup usually involves some type of distratction, if you looks at BJJ typically kicks or strikes are not made to injure but distract fro the TD. What do you see as the problems what type of TD are you doing.
Reagrding wrestling clubs, I think true wrestling clubs are not only hard to find but you have to be extremely experienced to be involved. In the LA area I don't know but there has to be wrestling programs I am sure USC has a program. I would call the athletic deptartments and see if they will let you roll there may be an issue with the schools insurance. I would also check commmunity colleges, many of them have wrestling programs.
I just did a search it does seem a hell of a lot of wrestling programs have been discontinued in Cali

I am disappointed in you man......how did girls take 2nd place
Seriously, it is good to know you changed your life alot of knuckleheads don't. I was an underachiever also, not as bad, but school definately was not the priorty until I got to college.

Again the ket to the TD is confidence (which you will learn), committment (comes from confidence) and set-up (comes with experience).
BJJ are you fearing the sprawl or the cross face after. Is it actual fear or just that you don't have confidence ion your defence? Hwen you have good penetrationeven if someone sprawls so what, turn the corner and get to the side and behind, use a headlock or pancake. If they are sprawling and crossface or forearm in the neck let go and start fresh. I am not saying in a match but right now it is practice and you have to get comfortable with the techniques and your strengths and weaknesses.
When is the first tournament? When is the first team match?
thanks for the responses guys, i dont really know any takedowns except for the double leg ( where i step in-between their legs, go to my knee w/ my back foot dragging) and the single leg tackle (i get ahold of one leg and drive till i can wrap around the other leg) so like i said i dont really know much. there is a guy in our school who is a pretty good wreslter (freestyle) and hes worked with me a bit but i just dont feel confident. i guess i just need to work on my confidence and speed, im 6'2 250 so im not real quick (im not slow though) but i imagine that if i get ahold of anyone their goin down. none of the schools in this area have wrestling teams; there are a few clubs, however they are gay themed and im not interested. i did find one in east LA but thats too far away.
