  • Shaolin in pride/K1/UFC?

    Hi guyz,

    im new to the forum.

Im really posting in this forum in the hope to gain a little more knowledge on a subject I'm unsure of.

That is K1/UFC or Pride (or any other tornament ie. Muay Thai?)I know what they r in general rulez/regulations etc. though there r a few areas, im not 100% sure of.

Perhaps before i should tell u a little about what im talkin about,
I have been studying under Shifu Shi Yan Zi (aka -Mighty Steel Leg), Yan Lei (aka - Big Monster), Yan Jiang and Yan Chang, in Traditional Shaolin for a while now. Recently a friend of mine has suggested the idea of one of the monks competing in 1 of these tornaments; he also has the necessay contacts to arrange the fight. Though i would like abit of feedback from others before we choose a particular tornament.

The 2 most likely to fight would be either Shifu Yan Zi or Yan Lei both have tremendous experience in fighting and (Shifu Yan Zi also holds an undefeated record as China's San Shou Champion).
We have had offer an offer from Black Belt magazine to do a full cover story too, as the idea may finally settle the age old arguement "which is better Modern martial arts or traditional".

So basically the situation is this; i have the above idea which i think will be of great benefit to my school (Shaolin Temple UK) and its reputation. And i have to sell this idea to the monks soon, Yan Lei has thought about competing in K1 before but never persued the matter because of hassle of arranging contacts and the time demands.

For their to be a fight their must be good reason, so ideas of money and publicity for the school (the school desperately needs more money to expand) come in to play. Also The monks have a huge demand on their time as they must maintain their training, as well as teach the school and assist in the running of the school. This is the major problem....... time, they dont have the time to work themselves up the ladder.

The suggested method that was offered to me by the contact says that "the quickest way to gain reputation is perhaps an exhibition match with a Gracie, for which their would be no money offered for the fight, but then after and if the Gracie is beaten there will be plenty of high priced fight offers on the table as well as promotion money available".

Putting that method aside i would like to hear any suggestions of what i could tell the monks, bearing in mind the demands on time so a maximum of a few months out of the school tops.

    Important:
I would also really appreciate any ideas on tornaments that dont allow full grappling also (ie. muay thai and san shou) incase the monks don't like the idea of grappling in a tornament.

    Thankyou for any help

    Alex.

PS: feel free to express ur opinons on shaolin monks entering one of the tornaments, or how u'll think they'll fair, or feel free to ask me any questions about shaolin in general the monks or my training

I would love to see the monks win. But it should be true NHB no gloves. I am pro chineseMA but if they are concerned about fighting grapplers then that makes a staement about their art and their confidence. If a grapple can't take you down there is nothing to worry about

Okay, you ain't fighting a Gracie without grappling.

Second, I wouldn't pay 1 penny to see a monk fight in anything but NHB... which means full grappling.

Have them start working on their guard passes.

tell them to do whatever he can to NOT fight a gracie. im not saying that these guys arent good at their art but, if they dont have any grappling expierience they WILL lose. trying to keep from going to the ground with a gracie is futile and arrogent in my opinion. maybe they should worry about IF they could win in a NHB rather than which one they want to win. im sorry if this offends you but their is a reason traditional martial artists dont do well in MMA.

                          Shaolin pride

Firstly i have 2 say that the dicks whu are slagging of sanshou really dont know how powerful and deadly it is. 2ndly u guys have no idea how lethal yan lei and yan zi are. I am currently training under them and have done so for the past 6 yrs.
I do accept what u are trying to say tho that a truly experienced martial artist shudnt be put off by grappling. However, it is wrong to say this. I'll giv an analogy, its like 2 scientists one is a physicist one is a chemist, THER IS NO WAY u can pit them against each other in a "SCINECE" competition as they specialise in differnt fields of science. one scientists will be more proficient in certain areas than the otha. This is the same for martial arts. Yan Lei and yan Zi dont specialise in graplling therefore a competition involving grapling wud be unfair. For it to be fair i wud say kicks, throws punches and chin na (breaks and locks).

Bye the way SHAOLIN is by far the best martial art as its the mother of all martial arts!

That science analogy doesn't apply. A true martial art is supposed to work in a fight, if you are attacked you don't say "please don't grab me" or "please don't punch me", you have to deal with the circumstance. If they fight in UFC or Pride, then they have to deal with the rules. K-1 is just striking. But an individual fighter has to work their way up the ranks, noone is allowed to automatically enter the biggest MMA shows, except for people who have proven themselves in smaller ones or people who have been recommended and trained by champions.

Cung Le does san shou and is supposed to be a good mma fighter also. Do these guys fight in a similar style to him?

As opposed to the non-deadly martial arts?

Ever held a rear naked choke on someone for 3 minutes after they pass out?
