  • weight of boxin gloves - maybe stupid q!

What weight gloves should I buy for muay thai pad work and sparring?

my main sparring partner has 10 oz, people have been saying 14's for sparring as you can hit harder as they offer more protection, and 8's for bag work - so basically both ends of the spectrum. I might just get 10s or 12s?

    cheers

I use 14oz gloves, those 10's hurt for everyday sparring.

14oz are intended for training, yet, they are huge in my eyes and require you to position your hands differently than you would with the standard 12oz or bear knuckle. To me 14oz are like holding two pillows in front of your face. It tempts the novices to hide behind their 14oz pillows (gloves) and obstruct their vision.

I recommend 12 oz gloves, training light with your sparing partners, and training often.

Agreed , you wouldn't want to use only 14's all the time. Big gloves reduce the number of fat lips and black eyes in your class, and using them will make the fight gloves easier to hold up. On the other hand, 10-12's are somewhat harder to cover with, move faster, and hurt more.

So my feeling is, use the heavies for everyday sparring, but also use the lights regularly - especially if you are gearing up for a fight.

If you can only afford one, I would get the heavier ones, then the lighter ones later on. As you can see, though, this is a judgement call.
