  • What type of punch is harder?

Seeing we have so many so-called "boxing experts" on the forum. I have a question for you guys. My friend and I had an argument about what type of punch is harder and has more KO lethalness in a boxing match and in a streetfight. A straight right hand (or left hand for you southpaws) or an overhand right. I say straight right hand. He said overhand right. A straight right hand has more speed and goes right down the pipes. An overhand is a good punch if your face to face on the street in an argument position right in each others faces, but still in the ring or on the street, I say throw a straight right.

    Thoughts anyone?

You're not going to get a definate answer. Everyone's different. I'm right handed, but have more KO power with my left hook, and more speed in my right, therefore I notice myself naturally standing southpaw.

My humble opinon would be what ever the person has the best technique in and is most comfortable with.

I PERSONALLY like the overhand. It has gravity on it's side, and it's easier FOR ME to put my weight into the punch when I'm working WITH gravity. But the straight cross is good too, coming straight down the pipe it has the ability to knock your opponent BACK more than the overhand. I prefer to knock them DOWN. But I totally agree with yella tiger's post.

          More schooling for the Whippersnapper:

It depends on your height and reach. If you're tall, punching down, a straight right.

If you're short and thick, an overhand.

          Yours truly,

          Joe

Joe Skankho, if you're tall and have a long reach, you would want to throw an over hand right. You have leverage on your side when punching down on a shorter fighter. Why do you think Lewis has such a good over hand right. If you're short, an overhand is good too but it's more of a lethl weapon for taller fighters.

              Colon Muncher:
The best right-handers (who were tall and skinny) were men like Hearns and Monzon. Lethal. And they threw their punches straight as an arrow. Lewis may have had some success throwing his overhand, but he should not be mentioned in the same sentence as the above two. Yes, tall men can throw them overhand, and short men can throw them straight too, but IMO it is *best* when done as I suggested.

              Yours truly,

              Joe

You seem to be on Hearns dick alot. I too respect Tommy for his power, but even a neanderthal like yourself has got to admit, Tommy had no chin and no stamina at all. However he DID win that second fight with Leonard. Draw my ass. Leonard got spanked. It was the Leonard/Hagler fight that should've been a draw. That's why it should be like the old days where they fight 'till a KO occurs. And bare knuckle...LOL

No, Colon Muncher, I'm not on anyone's d!ck. I used Tommy as an example of how a natural hard puncher moved up in weight, but NOT in punching power ... and now I used him as an example of a perfect straight right.

For you to say he had "no" stamina and chin at all is a joke. He's been the distance several times, and very few have ever KO'd him - and it took the best in the world on the few times it did happen. Tommy annihilated everyone else.

Chin and stamina may not have been Tommy's finest points, but they were well above average in order for him to have done what he did at that level, and in that era. So-called fighters like Vargas, Tito, Whitaker, and De La Puto would be starched by a prime welter Hearns so fast they would never know what hit them.

                    Yours truly,

                    Joe

Just because you go the distance doesn't mean you have good stamina, it's what you do on the way there. At times, in the later rounds, Hearns broke down (first Leanord fight). And his chin was VERY fragile anytime he got popped good (Hagler fight). And to say Hearns would've "starched" the welters and middles of today is ridiculous to say the least. I agree he would've beat De La Pussy and Whitaker, but Tito would've destroyed a prime Hearns. Tommy's style was PERFECT for Felix. Also Reid and Vargas would've given him a tough fight. Reid has way more heart than Hearns. If you don't beleive me, watch the Reid-Trinidad fight. The REAL man from that 80's welter era was...The Marvelous One. No doubt about it.

                        WTF?!?

You say Tito would kill Hearns?!?

Of all the fighters listed Tito had the WORST chance. Hell, he was SCARED of De La Puto and wouldn't step on the gas! Furthermore Tito is 5'11" to Hearns' 6'1" ... and if ever there were a china chin among the group it is TITO'S!

Here's an equation for you bright guy:

Tito's China Chin + Tito's Shorter Reach + Tito's Slower Hands + Hearns' Incredible Jab + Hearns' Unparalleled, Devastating Right Cross = Tito KO'd like he was shot with an Elephant Gun.

Oh, and yeah, whatever ... fading down the stretch to incredible body & head shots in the FOURTEENTH to a prime Leonard at the very top of his game means Hearns had "no stamina." Hell Hearns had made a comeback up until the 12th and would have WON in this era of 12 rounders. Again, whatever.

                        Yours truly,

                        Joe

Colonie you have no idea how much this hurts and I am not talking a small pain but the pain of losing one of your testicles, but I agree with Joe Manco. You show your lack of boxing experience when you say a taller fighter should throw an overhand right. Quiet the contrary, when a taller guy throws an O.R. you have to squat down for it to land which puts you at a dis-advantage. Thru the history of boxing taller men have always thrown straight rights not O.R. from Sandy Saddler to Vernon Forrest, the straight right is the weapon of choice. Also it pisses me off when you say Joe is on Hearns dick if anyone is on his nuts it's me. For you to go off on anyone when it comes to your boxing "knowledge" is a joke. You also said "Hagler was the best fighter of the welterweight era" you dumbass Hagler was never a welter. "Tito would kill Hearns" give your mom her crack pipe back. You haven't had enough fights or been in the gym long enough to know what your talking about. So do not post until you start fighting and go to a national tourney. Until then you are just another bitch I will have to keep in check.

Hey Big Bird if you were such a ****ing good boxer, how come you aren't a ****ing pro than? How come I don't see you on PPV? How come you are on the net suckin' Joe Skankho's dick instead of fighting? Why? I'll tell you why, because you are like Joe: A fake internet thug who likes to disrespect people on the net because in real life, all you ever turned out to be was a wannabe gym rat. You were the type of guy that carried the spit bucket and held the punch mits for the 6 year olds.

And as for me. I am just starting to get back into the groove and I plan on one day becoming a successful pro. Whether I do or don't, I'm gonna atleast gonna go balls-to-the-wall and try.

So as you can see, YOU ARE A NOBODY. And I have the chance to be a somebody. How does that make you feel scrub? I have a chance. You don't.

                            HA! HA! HA!

Your knowledge of boxing is next to nil and extends back about 5 years. Wow!

And if anyone was a wanna-be thug it would be YOU. Just look at your signature
