Ladies & gents:
Rey & Hura and their adorable son were intown last weekend and Rey conducted a 2 hour seminar at Carlson Gracie Jr's school on Sunday - actually he gave about a 2.5 hour seminar.
I thought that it was a very good seminar: he showed 3-4 takedowns, 3-4 sweeps, a few pass the guard techniques, combined with about 4-5 submissions. We spent the entire time either watching him demonstrate or practicing the moves. It was enough tecnhiques for 1 month of training! I just hope that I can remember 50% of them
Rey is an excellent teacher and a BJJ machine. He obviously enjoys teaching and is quite personable, too. I was also surprised by how smooth and quick he is for a pretty big guy - 6'2", 200? Someone described him as a 'sweeping machine' and this seems accurate. He makes the moves look so natural and easy.
Hura also helped out, particularly with our female students. They were surprised (pleasantly) by how good she is when she dominated them in sparring. We dont have any woman of her level (yet?) at our school, so I think it was great for them to see the 'next level'.
Anyway, Rey gave a great seminar and I would recommend that anyone attend his class and/or seminars if they get the chance! I doubt you will be disappointed.
I think he will give another one in Chicago with Carlson in January. Maybe two three hour sessions over a weekend.
Besides this, we had our first promotion test is 8 months and there were many new belts. There were about 9-10 new blue belts, 3 purple belts, 2 brown belts and 2 black belts!
Rey was there, too, and by the end we had the most senior belts together that I have ever seen: 4 black belts, 5 brown belts, 6 purple belts, about 16-18 blue belts and even more white belts!
Incidentally, I got my blue belt, too, after about 22 months of training. It is a nice sign of progress - and I have the bruises to prove it.
All in all, a big BJJ weekend in Chicago.
Cheers
