There are two approaches you can take based on the position you get. The first is to push his legs back towards his head, cradle one of the them tightly to his head, and then pass very tightly to that same side. The other way is to press both his ankles to the ground, and slowly inch your way up either side. That's a rough description of it; there are lots of things one could do wrong while executing this. If you're standing try to keep your weight back because if he can get you off balance or leaning forward, you'll get swept.

If your opponent is using the spider guard, you either have to put your weight on top of them and close any distance you have, keeping your hips out and you can knock the foot that's on a bicep with your hip or by lowering your upper body and knock it off with your knee. Easier to show than it is to explain.

The second way is to create distance from your opponent by pulling away and then using your weight, keep ahold of their knees and putting your upper weight on the knees to immoblize the knees and you can pass around the knees and legs for side mount or another position.

As I said, easier to show than it is to explain with text.

if you want great instruction on passing the spider guard and just passing the guard in general, there's a great book Passing the Guard by Tim Cartmell and Ed Benneville.

        check it out at www.nhbgear.com

The book has some great techniques and color photographs to show the techniques.

Although it's meant for BJJ, you can use many of the guard pass techniques for No Gi also.
