  • What is the TRUTH about Sonnon's style?

I'd like the help of the board experts here on my first post. I tried posting this over on Sonnon's forum, but I didn't receive a satisfactory reply. I tried posting this over at the "kungfu magazine" forum, bullshitdo and martialtalk, and a bunch of jock-riding phaggots all posted their hero worship for this guy.

I'd like to know from REAL people and not paid endorsements people who have trained with Scott in his style of Russian martial art. Is this legit or is it just some composite of rehashed traditional martial arts with a scientific spin? Ive heard about him wrestling, but I dont give a damn if he's a world sombo champ. It's just wrestling and there's absolutely no way anyone could argue that fact. Thinking he can fight because he can wrestle is as absurd as teaching BJJ to the US Rangers.

Don't get all in a huff. I'm not a troll, but I call it like I see it.

So who here has actually seen Scott fight and who here has actually fought him? If he can't fight, then in my opinion it's all just smoke and mirrors.

I'd like to hear REAL practical applications people have made from personally studying under him, not any evangelical praises about a large vocabulary.

Last question. What can I learn from Scott that I can't learn from someone else and paying my annual dues for my library card? Is there ANYTHING unique about Scott's style, or is it all just repackaged?

I have to admit I'm getting quite annoyed with this Russian martial arts mystique with the special forces card played way too much, the no-touch psychic combat, Sombo wrestling (it's only a fricking SPORT!), drunkfu movement, contradictory breathing, faith healing, remote viewing, causing sleep, and of course pseudoscientific jargon everywhere. I'd like to know about hte MAN not the madness. What's the REAL story on the guy?

Flocks (emphasis on SHEEPLE) of his students talked about how he and the other russian gurus are the biggest baddasses on the 21st century block but no one could answer how what they do is unique and what they teach that an authentic martial arts master cannot.

I respect candor and honesty which is why I do not wear gloves when I ask questions. I expect the same in return. I am hoping to get more of a candid reply before checking him out personally at his next "camp" (brainwashing?) so don't call me a troll for shooting straight and talking from the heart.

If you think I'm talking about Chael Sonnen from Team Quest, your wrong. I'm talking about Scott Sonnon from www.rmax.tv/sonnon.html

Good....I was hoping you werent talking about Chael cause he is the real deal.
Sambo is MORE than just a sport just as BJJ is more than just a sport.
This may make you laugh.....but there is some exellent sambo in the movie In Hell with (gasp)Van Damn. Not that he is good at it,but the guys in the movie with him are.You should check it out.And it's a good movie too.

Here is one thing. Sambo is divided into three parts. Sport sambo, self defense sambo, and combat sambo. The sport aspect is just one part, there is a lot more to sambo. Can you please show me the no-touch knockout, drunken kung fu, and all the other things you claim is in Russian martial arts. There is not much mystique about it, when you check it out its very straightforward and scientific. I have not done much training in ROSS, but at least I have done something in it so I can make an honest opinion. But you haven't even read a book about it and you are making an extreme opinion. Many top mma people are implementing Russian sambo and ROSS methods like Elvis Sisonic, Fedor and the Russian top team and lots of bjj guys do the leg locks of sambo. Recently some top guys have implemented the club training tool. Pure ROSS practicioners have been entering the mma ring and doing very well. Please educate yourself in ROSS before making such extreme opinions about it.

I honestly dont give a damn if UFC fighters like Elvis Sinosic and Andrei Arlovski trained with Sonnon and his stuff. Theyre already superior athletes so it doesnt mean anything. And yeah I know that Sonnons produced successful MMA athletes in just his martial art. But they could just as easily been natural athletes. Even that the US Army uses his courses doesnt mean anything to me because thats about how tough the soliders already are. What I wanted to know was from someone who has personally trained with him what it was like or if ti was bullshit. You say its not but have you actualaly trained with him?

MMA players have to choose the right people or they lose. If they could win just by being natural athletes than why do you think mma players try to get the best people they can? They also know what is b.s. or not. I have not trained with Shonnon. But I have trained with his instructors and I know people that have trained with him personally that think highly of him. A person on this forum that has trained with him says he is good as well. I do not think you will ever find your answer unless you train with him though. You have visited about 5 forums from what I heard, trashed Shonnon and when people start saying he is good, you go to others forums and say they are just some hero worshipers of Shonnon.

Well, I've not trained with Scott, per se, but I was at a seminar where he was teaching and I do have some of his vids.

What he was teaching at the seminar was, as he put it, "not PT and not application - but something between, exercises that can tie your PT to your application." And that's exactly what it was. It was exercises that, by themselves, were just interesting exercises that could help with a lot of different things like joint mobility, tendon/ligament strength, balance, breakfalls, and ground mobility. But they were also geared toward specifically developing attributes that would help with martial application regardless of what system you train.

My impression of Scott as a person is that he's very cool, down to earth, and very knowledgable about anatomy and movement - related to martial arts and otherwise.

            Mike
