  • h.s wrestling for a newb

hi ive always wanted to do wrestling but really never had the time couse i had a job and i went to a night school where there was no sports. im in 11th grade know and next year i will be able to go back to the regular school. do you think that its to late to try wrestling out? ive never been in wrestling before but i was in football and i was in karate from 3-12. well i just the question is could i still do good in this up agianst people that have been doing it along time. and what should i do to prepare.

p.s i weight around 125-130 and im pretty strong and quick for my size and im good at wrestling with friends alot bigger then me.

It's never too late to try it out. You haven't taken Bjj or Judo yet, that's good. I took Bjj before I did wrestling and got pinned a bit in the first few practices(because I was used to laying on my back). Just remember, when you get taken down, immediately turn to your back.GL.

Well you can wrestle but the competition is stiff in your weight class(alot of kids usually fall into it). You have alot of catching up to do this late in the game. Practice, practice, practice is what I stress to the kids I volunteer coach. If you learn the basics and master them you should be ok. Wrestling is mostly conditioning and alot of technique. Be prepared to invest the time if you plan to join the team.

Well obviously you are a troll but besides that point exactly what are your qualifications to totally write off the sport?

I am not writing off the "sport" but this is a martial arts forum not a sports forum. I have come into contact with a lot of egotistical wrestlers in my school who come in thinking they are bad asses. when they realize that they cant win by make my shoulders touch the mat, it is too late because they are tapping out or being choked out already.
Is troll the best yu could do?

Hate to break it to you but Judo is a sport aswell. I am assuming you are a judoka from the name kodankan. You seem to have a large ego yourself. I see a pot calling the kettle black situation going on.

actually, kodan kan karate kai is a karate style with highlights of other styles incorporated to make it more effective. We include jujitsu for submission, muy tai, judo for takedowns, aikido for joint locks, boxing for hand skill, and aspects of kung fu like sticky hands. Put together this has given us success in the ring in boxing tournaments, karate tournaments, grappling meets, and contact karate tournaments

I dont mean to give the impression of a large ego. Unfortunately, i have been in some real horrific situations where i have been witness to what really works. wrestling doesnt win in a fight against a grappler. i am sorry for coming across as superior. martial arts were designed for combat. wrestling for sport. Choose your path, but realize the nature of the style and dont try to put them in the same realm

Wrestling is grappling. Aside from that why do you assume skills picked up in wrestling couldnt be applied in a fight?
