Can't believe it - had my first bjj experince and was "tapped out" by a 13 year old kid. I am a normal sized adult (well slightly smaller than averge but never thought of myself as weak) . the kid is not more than about 5 ft 3 110 lbs and i was very embarased to be honest. Is this a normal thingto happen or am i just really bad at fighting? Has it happened to anyone else - would maeke me feel better!!! oviously this guy had done alot of training. He got me in a sleeper type hold an an "arm bar with the legs - tried really hard to get out belive me but had to tap both times, was totaly helpless. Amazing thougth.

That just proves Bjj's effectiveness. The kid is half your size but he just knew what to do.
So yes it is regular. If you know who butterbean is you might be interested in a fight between him a little guy named Genki Sudo. Hes a great grappler and tapped this 400 pounder out with a knee bar.
Don't take it badly, just use it as a lesson. Now you know what a little guy can do, just think about what you will be able to do when you have as much training as him.

Well here are my questions:
How old are you?
are you stying BJJ and for how long?
Was this in competition or in a dojo?
What is your MA background?
Have you participated in competityion ion the past?
I cetainly couldn't answer your quesstion without these answers

Good Point
Technique and skill is underemphasized in the public at large. People get the false impression that "how much ya bench" is the be all end all thing that makes someone a great fighter. Strength matters, but without technique its nothing.
Good example of Butterbean vs Genki Sudo. Sudo is about 5'8" and 155lbs. Butterbean is about 6' and 370lbs - Butterbean's claim to fame is his fierce record in Toughman competitions. Sudo being shorter, BBean had to punch down into his opponent, which is not an advantage in boxing unless you have superior timing...
Anyhow these guys squared off in Pride not long ago. Sudo was able to land a few kicks into butterbean's thighs and chest and weaved in and out of bean's punches. Sudo then launched a knee into bean's head and bean fell on top of Sudo, but wasn't hurt. Sudo was able to get superior position and secure a knee bar (what you described as a leg bar with his arms) and the giant tapped.
Another example is Royce Gracie (6' 176) who has tapped out black belt karate masters and wrestlers at the 300 lb range.
Don't feel bad. Tapping out is all about learning. Anyone who has trained in jj has been tapped out many times. Be humble, willing to learn and check the ego at the door.

thanx will look up sudo. dont think it was a knee bar i got: i know now itys called an armbar, just i thougt that was when you put someones arm behind the back. so i was totaly surprised by the armbar with legs over the neck and one arm trapped; the kid seemd to have strong legs which werew stronger than my arms! also he was somehow able to t urn it into a choke.

Don't feel bad. Tapping out is all about learning. Anyone who has trained in jj has been tapped out many times. You learn a little more each time and eventually you start tapping out the other guys. There's allways someone better than you.

Don't think about it too much, the only reason you lost was because you never had any ground fighting experience. I'd say stick with Bjj for at least 2 months just to see what it can really do.
Oh and one more thing, when you sparred with the kid, was punching allowed, what kind of match was it, whatrules, can you describe your fight a little more??
P.S.-NEVER and I mean NEVER turn to your stomach when your back is to the ground. When you get taken down, instad of turning to your stomach. stay on your back and try to get your legs around they kid, then lock your feet together. This is called "the guard"

No punching - just wrestling. i thought itd be easy, just get the kid in a headlock but he kepet blocking. It never crossed my mind that i migt lose - he was spo much smaller. i remember him grab my wrists and doing the guard like you describe. but i dont know how he got to he holds - was very quick; the armbar sseemed to come out of nowhere! i guess ill know for next tieme, but dont think i coudl get out of thoses holds thats what was so amazing; my question is what experieces other people have of a much smaller fighter winning like this??? am i the only one to be tapped out by a kid!
p.s. i think with punching i wouldve won!

Possibly, but if you were allowed to punch so would he and he would have different stragey. Again, the point should not be winning or loosing. You learned something new that you were not exposed to previously. It seems that you are interested in BJJ an you got your first lesson, while humbling, don't focuis on the teacher being 13. I would look at the situation and say "hey if this kid is this good at 13, how good will I be as an adult".
I have not formally trained in BJJ and so no that has not happed to me.

Will try and think of it that way. but was just such a shock.....its hard to think of a 13yr od as a teacher!

What if i still end up in one of the holds - is there any way out or is ti too late when its on? the sleeper hold seemed impossibel to escape. sorry if these are basic questions!
