  • Why don't they ever use this takedown?

In Judo, it is called the side drop(YOKO-OTOSHI). In wrestling it is called the lateral drop. It is where you and your opponent are in the over & under clinch. You drop down to your butt, while twisting to your side and throwing him down. Why doesn't anybody use this move? I use it all the time and i have no trouble with it.

Well to be honest they really are not the same move but very similar.

The problem with the lateral drop is that is too easy to counter if you are not quick in the roll through, keep the under hook and maintain control. I would use it purely as a throw not falling back, more like a "pancake"

YOKO-OTOSHI is a sacrifice type throw (sutemi waza) and generally the way I have learned it as a throw, meaning you do not maintain contact - you literally throw the person away from you. I would think not a good move for tournaments. Personally, I do not use it alot because I do not want to loose contact with an opponent but again it is a sacrifice throw it has its place.

Fedor uses a throw like that all the time in Pride.
