  • How many streetfighters actually know how to grapple?

Here is a question I have been pondering.
From the members of the forum who have been in fights, how many of the guys who fought you not knowing of your skills could actually pose a threat at all?
How many of your fights involved people who surprised you with their knowledge of ground fighting or just wrestling skill? (and I'm not talking about challenge matches with wrestlers, etc)

I have had a few fights, and a few challenge matches with bigger guys, etc. But to be honest, none of the people I got into squirmishes with could really fight on the ground. The 8 year wrestlers and all that I always kept as friends!

    Any stories or comments?

Prior to the UFC and the ground fighting fad, a good street fighter may not have known submission ground fighting or wrestling. It didnt really matter because his opponent did not know either.
Most good street fighters ive seen instantly go for an eye gouge or a fish hook if they get on the ground.
Its amazing how quickly the other guy gets diminished if you tickle his cornea a little bit. Then get back to a knee high position and use your knee to smash his head or stand up and drop the knee onto the other guys ribs, neck or head.

Have you noticed how Pro MMA fighters completely freak out if they get gouged or fish hooked? They carry on like little bitches. This proves that these techniques are worthwhile tricks for any real fighters arsenal.
MMA is for jocks and fitness freaks. Street fighting is for guys with no scruples that will use any dirty trick to win.

There are guys out there in the real world that would KILL Kerr, Coleman, Igor V, Sak and the others within 1 minute of attacking them. Put them in a ring under MMA rules and they wouldnt last 10 seconds with those same fighters.

                  bouncers

My pancrase teacher is a bouncer on the weekends and he deals with all kinds of people. He's thrown Dallas Mavericks players, drug dealers, lawyers, and collegiant wrestlers down the stairs of his club. He says no one knows submissions worth a damn and after you pop someone across the bridge of their nose, getting them beneath you (knee on the stomach usually) is pretty easy. Has he had to bounce 'street fighters'? Who knows? I am not even sure what that term really means. But using MMA, he has never had a problem with anyone really he says.

Oh really? So tell us the names of some of these "good streetfighters" you've known.

Where did you see them fight?

How many times have you seen them do this?

Or maybe your tripe about "MMA fighters would get killed" is more of the same bull-crap that that Ninja pettifoggers have been peddling for years.

                    Please tell us.

Tell us about these fighters you've seen.

                      Hey Ryu....

                      Good post!
I think that alot of what you do in the ring you have to change on the street, but overall, you are going to be alot better off than those who don't train to groundfight.
But, eye-gouging and fishhooking definitly counts for something!
I remember back in the days before Gracies, BJJ, the UFC and all that, getting into fights in the schoolyard and when it went to the ground the first thing people did was either try to eye-gouge or fishhook. I saw many a fights ended when someone put their fingers 3 inches deep into someones skull through the eye socket.
In fact, the first big fight I was in, I was 12 years old and thought I was an orange belt karate badass. This bigger kid I was fighting cought one of my lame front kicks and took me down and sat on my chest and started hitting me.
I took it for awhile, but when he leaned alittle to close I got the idea to gouge his eyes. I put my index fingers knuckle deep into his eye sockets and started wiggling them around. This kid, who was about 30lbs heavier than me, started screaming and rolled off me rubbing his eyes.
His Mom almost sued my parents because the kid had permanent eye damage and had to wear glasses after that. I almost had charges pressed against me, but we had witnesses who said he started the fight.
                      Anyway,
Eye-gouging on the ground works! And it is something any old street punk can do to you, so whether they know MMA or not, I would still be weary of any attacker.

I WISH some punk would try to eye-gouge me on the street.

Since I would be the one contolling the position and controlling the distance, I would take great enjoyment in SLOWLY pulling his eyes out and then breaking his wrists, elbows, knees, and ankles. After that I would cave his face in with my big black boots and stomp his genitalia into pudding.

Against a trained fighter I can't think of anything more suicidal than trying an eye-gouge.

But, if you don't want to train in a good martial art, eye-poking and testicle biting can be very effective shortcuts to winning a fight, so long as you only pick on untrained fighters.

Against a trained fighter eye-gouging will get you killed.

Personally, I like being able to do both.

I can't believe I am doing this but.....Shimora: In the sixty years that people were streetfighting/developing Brazillian Jui-jitsu, do you really think that no-one ever thought of eye gouging and fish hooking? Of course they did. That is why position is always emphasized, because good position means that your opponent is not able to do these things to you.

Eye gouging and fish hooking are just like any other technique: effective, but only when the opportunity presents itself. Saying that a street fighter will always be able to do these things is like saying someone will always win with a triangle choke or a flying armbar....possible, but not very likely.

By the way, I speak from some experience, I was a bouncer for many years. There are a few of secrets to my longevity in that former profession. One, I always used pepper spray and a stun gun. Secondly, if there was a fight, I always radioed for back up, I almost never engaged alone. Thirdly, when there was a fight, I always let the guys fight (inevitably one the ground) until one guy was clearly the winner. Then, I would step in.

Often, the winning combatant would still want to fight me. Back then I was a bodybuilder with a wrestling background. If the fight continued, it was just like what u see in todays mixed martial arts events, inside punching, tie ups, grappling takedowns and then ground fighting (G and P, since no-one knew submissions back then.

My larger point is that the best way to prepare for the streets, besides staying away from trouble (and carrying pepper spray), is to train like todays mixed martial artists, with maybe a little more emphasis on standup. Thinking you can rely on something like an eye gouge, biting, or fishooking is delusional, in fact when it happened to me, it only pissed me off, and made things much worse for my opponent.
