Are you not allowed to ask this of your instructor?

It's different at every school. My school doesn't have a blue stripe. Don't know what that is. Your instructor probably wouldn't let you test if he didn't think you were ready.

I've heard of belt tests but have never heard about test for stripes.......weird.

I guess every instructor has a different set of criteria for testing or for awarding belts and stripes.

I'm curious if your instructor charges for the stripe test...

By my experience, if he was being graded for Blue Belt (1 tip or no tip)...must have doing BJJ for at least 2 years..

The Machado schools in Australia that I've seen all have gradings for stripes. They cost money, but not much. Maybe like $10 or $15.

I train under the Rickson Gracie Association and we have stripes. You need 2 blue stripes before you are invited to test for a blue belt. Each stripe takes a relatively long time to attain, so if you're relatively new, I don't see why you would be testing. I didn't test for my first stripe until almost 3 years.

Anyway, your instructor should be working in the test requirements slowly as the scheduled test date approaches. This seems to be something many gyms do. Also, your instructor should post the stripe test requirements on the board. Most gyms that I've visited do this. It seems peculiar that your gym doesn't let its students know what the test covers and what to practice.
