  • the dumbest question i've ever asked

Okay I've asked alot of stupid questions but this one beats 'em all. After a few painfull lessons of wrestling its finally dawned on me that I need to get a cup. So basically my question is what kind of protection do you guys use ? Just a cup or should I go for the whole jock strap type set up, I've never bought a cup, so yes this is a serious question. so please give me some responses and if you want you can make fun of me too . Also what kind of mouthpieces do you guys use?

Buy a cup and jock strap. The jock strap mimicks underwear that has a pocket for the cup to cover your jewels. The jock strap is made of an elastic material that gives tension when you stretch it. That tension should keep the cup in place. It takes some getting used to at first, but after a while its ok. Its also important that you buy a big enough cup so that your jewels can still move around and not get strangled.

I don't know about mouth guards for wrestling, but for boxing you can get a plastic moldable one for $0.99 at your sports store. Once you mold it, try working out with it in so you get used to obstructed breathing.

thanks for the reply, thats exactly what i wanted to know. the only reason I was asking about the mouth piece, is that I get hit in the nose, crotch, and some guy slammed his forearm in my throat all in one class, so I just figured better safe than sorry.

      Thanks again Tom

I just got six stitches from catching a forehead on an entry in BJJ. Definate on the mouth piece. Everybody has started wearing them now.

Ear protectors aren't a bad Idea either, We had a guy get Califlower ear in two weeks of rolling. It was the size of a roll of quarters. He had to go have it drained a few times.

wow that sucks about the califlower ear, O and thanks for the other replys, I wasnt able to find a small enough turtle shell to use as a cup, so I just went to the children section at academy and got an extra small cup, and that fit me. ITs a little loose but it'll do.

i use a cup and the jock strap, takes awhile to get use to the feel of it.
As for the gym mouthpiece i use just use the cheap ones, about £1.50.

Hey seany85, thats what I ended up going with, and your right about it taking a while to get used too, wrestling with it felt really uncomfortable, but having someone's shin or knee slamming into my junk felt alot worse, so I'll take the trade. O and I think I have you beat on the price of the mouthpiece I got mine for .99 <--American, I'm not sure what the conversion is, but mines really cheap

Hey I just thought I'd share this with you guys,

A guy I was rolling with was going way to fast. He tried to jump to his feet to get out of my gaurd. he broke free and then tried to leap over my legs and planted his groin right on my knee.
The next day he came in and said he would not be rolling for awhile. he had torn his scrotum when he hit my knee and there was about an inch to an inch and a half tear in the skin. He could see inside. It required several stitches, but he waited to long and they would not put the stitches in so he had to stay out for about a month and a half.

Just to update you on one thing - what you're describing is hematoma of the ear - when the tissue in the ear is ruptured and fills with blood, hence the roll of quarters . If that hematoma is not treated, the blood hardens into cartilage and starts to literally break down, resulting in the chewed up folded gnarled look - cauliflower ear.
And yes, headgear is KEY after having your ear drained since the hematoma is more likely to come back then.

wow, that groin tearing story is priceless. and that's usually how injuries happen, someone getting in a hurry, excited, and they jump the gun and try to get tough. i wear a cup and a mouthpiece with people i don't feel comfortable rolling with. An arm on the throat is one thing, but if you have to worry about being bit on the groin when you do a triangle then you might want to add a little etiquette to your training

Many people dont use them but there are times when you just need it!

I use the all in one jock strap type.

Believe it or not if you get a good kick, knee, elbow or punch to the crown jewels, even with a groin guard, you can still feel it but obviously not as bad, but it can still take the wind out of your sails.

When I first did jj, I put in my gum shield and was told that I wouldnt be needing that, and so took it out.
Then soon afterwards whilst rolling about got punched right in the mouth, and through a bleeding lips, I mumbled "who said I dont need a gum shield?"

                              Someone else mentioned ear protection?
                              Yes ears are really sensitive.
When I have fought "no-rules", and someone has grabbed my ears with both hands and twisted and yanked, you wouldnt believe how painful it can be!!!!
But then you can carry on what about hair, fingers, eyes, fish hooking etc!

You'd need a suit of armour to really protect against someone who is fighting realistically(no-rules)
Once when a fight got a bit out of control I bit hard as I could into the back of my opponents bicep!
He was almost crying in pain!

                              Bicep protectors????
