  • MMA school $100/month. Expensive?

Posting here because it seems like the most active forum and this school is MMA.

I'm a newbie who sat in on a class and liked the looks of it. Liked the teacher and students- everything about it seems positive. Teacher is certified under Inosanto. The program has the following classes every week:

    3 Cardio kickboxing classes
2 Muay Thai kickboxing classes (mixed with some JKD)
    2 Kali weapons classes
    2 Silat grappling classes

Not knowing how much is normal to pay I have to ask: Is $100/month + $100 fee to join and a 1 year contract too expensive for this?

It is the only MT/JDK/Kali/Silat place within 60 miles of my house (it is only 10 mins away, which is nice).

Since it is $100/month if I do it I'll probably cancel my gym membership and make it my main form of fitness.

    Thanks!

Affordability is important, but above all else you should think about how much you are going to commit to your training as the return on your investment.

If you show up and go through the motions, then you might get some satisfaction, some fitness.

If you go and give it 110%, listen to your instructor, practice at home, work yourself into a drench while having fun then you're going to get the most out of it.

If price is your only concern, pull out the yellow pages and call around.

I'm wondering what country you're in and if it's the U.S., what part?

the gym i train at is setup in a similar fashion. newcomers pay 99$ a month. here's what you get for the external arts:

        Sunday: Grappling/BJJ
Monday: Phase I(curriculum based); Lameco/Kali/JKD; Muay Thai/Western Boxing
        Tuesday: Muay Thai only
Wednesday: 2 hours Open Gym followed by Grappling
Thursday: Same as monday but phase I doesn't run.
Friday: Open gym where the head instructor is present and basically giving free private lessons on a first come first serve basis.

there's a lot to learn within that set and I don't think 100$ a month is too steep at all to charge for that. i paid 45$ a month at a school once and felt like i was getting ripped off. That was mainly because what i was learning was pure crap. if it's garbage then no matter how much they're charging is a waste. if it's real instruction, like i believe i'm getting, then it's all the more worth it. I want something i can use in everyday life, for self defense, awareness, health reasons, competition, etc... that's a lot to ask, but it should be delivered. real martial arts are empowering and life changing, they aren't franchised BS with black belt clubs and wierd mini organizations, belts and patches. a modicum of all that is fine, but when its just a tool of distraction to get you fooled into buying it soon becomes worthless.

check the salt of your training regularly; if you're not able and competent after 6 months of training and have seen drastic improvements then it might not be worth your time.

currently i pay 200 a month. I get all the group classes, plus the internal arts (Tai Chi, Yichuan, Qigong, push hands) and 4 private lessons a month. i think it's incredible worth it. I've tested my mettle throughout the past year with folks who have come in, at seminars and other gyms and i'm very very satisfied. i would keep looking until you have that feeling.

unless of course, all you want is a cardio workout and to lose a few pounds, a local fitness club could probably give you that.

        good luck, peace.

            Depends on where you live.

I have seen other people complain about $100/month classes, while in the DC area that's not too bad.

It also depends on <> Contract <> length, if you are paying that in a yearly contract it might be a bit steep.

But as Tom Yum said, if you like it and are getting some good knowledge out of it then it is probably worth it.

100 a month is about the standard for training here in southern california for training with a black belt in BJJ. you'l know if it's expensive after training there a little and you find out how much it's really worth to you.

I don't like the long term contract. At my gym we can terminate the contract at any time with a 3 month notice. That way if you decide it's not for you then you are only stuck with 3 month of payment.

Tekshow. When I first started training with Jeff his tuition was 40$ and we trained in his basement. Good to hear he is doing well.
