The link is pretty old, but here's the quote from the article (you can find it in the Thaiboxing & Kickboxing archives)

Smith allegedly approached Kendall as he was walking out of the gas station and demanded the keys, then took a swing at Kendall when he refused to hand them over, Kendall said.

Kendall said he ducked, dropped his java and laid out the other man with a three-punch combo.

“At first, I thought the guy was kidding,” Kendall said. “But he took a swing at me. I said, ‘OK. Showtime.’ ”

Kendall, 37, estimated that Smith, 34, outweighed him by 100 pounds; he weighs 160 and he put Smith at 260. But advantages in size don’t always pay off, especially when the lighter man owns the sports car and says he’s a kickboxer.

“I gave him three shots and he was out cold,” said Kendall, after disappointedly looking over the blood and coffee splattered on his driver’s side door.

Kendall said he hit Smith with a jab and then a left-and-right hook tandem. Blood seeped from Smith’s nose and mouth, Kendall said.

Smith will be charged with felony robbery, punishable by a maximum of 3½ to seven years in prison, Desmond said.

              Excellent!

Back in the day when semi contact figting was the order of the da, Kickboxers were top of the game. I mean real Kickboxers, not those who merely call themselevs Kickboxers but then reinvented semi contact......

Anyway, a friend of a friend was one and, I'm reliably informed, was approached by two guys who demanded his expensive jacket. Apparently he booted one in the balls and KO'd the other with a hook to the jaw.

Job done and jacket kept. I love stories like this.

Well thats great n all but what does a kick to the balls and hook REALLY have to do with kickboxing. Maybe I'm naive or ignorant but I've been in a few street fights (young and dumb) with no knowledge other than my obxing background. Those are things and ordinary person can do right? I mean I can appreciate a street story of someone facing off against a few goons and the martial artis breaking a arm of something of that nature but a simple shot to the groin and hook...........C'mon. Walk into a rough bar on any Fri or Sat and you'll see that for sure.

Its real self defense. A hook is a simple and effective technique. Haymakers are not hooks; big difference. Haymakers are all arm and swing out.

Hooks are short, crisp and quick backed by the weight. Some street fighters figure out how to put the weight behind a haymaker and add their power to it. That's still deadly too, but its slower and easier to see than a proper hook with the same weight behind it.

Ok, I'll agree with you on that but before I ever took into boxing and had my fare share of street fight wether it be in the confines of a bar or whatever a hook is pretty natural. Its the only close attack (that the average non-martial arts skilled) can do and get weight behind it fast and yes very effective.

                      the answer is:

a Jeet Kune Do of your own (compatible to your built)

like what i did, i take good moves to all subdivision of KungFu that i reach..... then i reject what is useless/not compatible to my built, then after mastered your alphabets of kungfu to your reach...... add especially what is your own........

express yourself and not that style.......

since i believe that no kungfu styles/systems that are perfect...... so i have no choice........

taking some moves also like MuayThai Roundkick to the head, and Tae Kwon Do Insteap Jumping Spinning Back Trust Kick to solar plexus.......

                      then......

I have a Jeet Kune Do of my own version suitable to myself........

Either that or the fight was in controlled conditions, like when the Gracies fight while surrounded in a circle by 20 of their on looking relatives. Those fights in my view are not at all examples of reality, based solely on the fact that they are attempting maneuvers that they wouldn't otherwise try if it were not for safety rules, or their controlled environment. I don't believe Royce would be willing to shoot in and attempt a mount or the guard if a guy with a knife was squaring off with him in an alley....and his brothers weren't there. Kickboxing and western boxing many times will have you respecting an opponent too much simply because they're conditioned to the rules of boxing. No competent fighter will back out of close quarters once he's closed the distance, and boxers do it in and out of the ring all the time.

                            Peace
Best lesson to learn from your speech about the Gracies.... if you are going to fight someone, bring 20 friends! Also about boxing.... Mike Tyson never had a problem with respecting an opponent too much.... if he couldn't knock you out, he would bite you out.
