It took 15 years for my instructor to get his BB.
One of his club mate which I forgot his name(big dude 1.95 meter, 120 kg) took him 6 years to get BB. He simply dominated the club scene and province competition.
The Brazilian top team came to his club for a seminar and 'invited'/'took' the big guy to join their team.
Yes when it comes to it physical attributes plays a bit part in BJJ or any MMA.

Seriously, all the styles you have mentioned have been beaten by BJJ so you are starting out wrong.

I think pstevens mad because hes been doing bjj for 7 years and only has a blue belt. Must be tough dude, I can see where all the anti-bjj is coming from.
I really don't get what point your trying to make dude.
The Gracies and BJJ have opened the doors to reality fighting and what really works. Yes in the beginning the Gracies boasted that BJJ was the greatest art... and during that time they were right. As the sport evolved, they had to adapt and learn to strike and wrestle. Whats the big deal, you should be glad that they are embracing the evolution of MMA instead of bitching about it, I know it hurts that your still a blue at the 7 year mark!
Now your bring up the point about BJJ NOT being the X factor. Well if fighters still refused to train in BJJ, they'd still be getting schooled by BJJ guys 90% of the time in the ring dude.
I don't know who gave you your blue belt my friend but walk into most BJJ schools and what they are teaching is sport bjj. BJJ with a gi made for fighting in Gi tournaments. The delivery system is a constant so yes you can take your sport bjj and adapt it to MMA. How do you do this? Well you take the gi off, figure out how to adapt your techiques without a gi to grab and the addition if strikes. Its that simple dude, and strict sport BJJ Black Belt can actually still help coach your grappling even if hes not a professional fighter.
Anyway, I hope I didn't reiterate anything anyone else said, I didn't want to read past the first page as I was getting tired of pstevens whinning.

By the way, is 7 years to get a blue belt in BJJ such a bad thing?

Originally posted by Mr. MiyagiYes, a lot of people did crosstrain and this took the sport to a much higher level. Fighters that lacked ability in striking and wrestling, but were great bjj artists, even if they crosstrained were quickly weeded out; some of them were given too many chances because their name happened to be Gracie. Most of the Gracies are not physical specimens, they worked hard at bjj and are good at it, but even if they train striking they can't be serious threats with it. On the other hand, tough athletes like Rampage and Henderson can easily learn a tiny bit of bjj and just use their other attributes to destroy a bjj fighter.
At the time Royce beat Dan Severn and earlier, Ken Shamrock, they had no idea about what his style or strengths were. Dan didn't even know what a triangle was when he got caught in one. If Dan knew what Royce's game was, he could easily have refused to go to the ground. Any top wrestler can decide to keep things standing against any top bjj fighter. And most of the time the wrestler's striking is better than the bjj artist's. Therein lies the problem for the bjj fighter. Dan Henderson knows this and knew that Renzo would never ever be able to take him down and would be at a severe disadvantage trading shots with him standing.
LOL at Ralph killing Gomi in a rematch. It may last longer but he'll get smacked around again. Ralph is aggressive but he hasn't really proven much in MMA. Gomi is one of the top lightweights in the world.
Rodrigo has gotten some decisions in snoozefest fights so far. He didn't beat Sakurai that badly, he won that decision mostly because he got side mount at the end of the fight, otherwise it was pretty even and boring. Sakurai has been doing way too many fights over the past several years and his body is worn down, even though he's not that old. He normally weighs less than 170. Japanese fighters do no cut weight for some reason and almost all of them can easily be 15-20 pounds lighter than the weight at which they fight. I think Sakuraba could easily be under 170 if he cut weight like a western fighter, Kondo could be under 185, Shoji could be under 190, Takada could easily drop 30 pounds of flab, etc. On top of that PRIDE seems to regularly schedule ridiculous matchups of overweight Japanese fighters against lean western fighters that have a 20 pound advantage over the Japanese. Someone like Rodrigo is pretty lean and wouldn't be able to cut much weight at all.
If Tito were Japanese and didn't care about cutting weight he'd weigh around 230, Silva would be about the same, most every western fighter would be 20 pounds heavier under Japanese training. That fat fool Sataake needs to drop about 40 lbs to be at his natural weight, his striking is not that bad but he's always fighting guys that are too strong and big for him; even if he has the weight it's about 40 lbs of fat too.
I think standing guillotines and standing kimuras that finish a fight are pretty rare. Usually a fighter that believes that they can get the guillotine standing ends up in a terrible position and no guillotine, very rarely do they get the guillotine. Everyone learns how at least two ways to escape/avoid a standing guillotine in grappling 101.
CKD, I like bjj too but you are such a huge Gracie as$ licker. You're not being reasonable and you defend the Gracies and bjj no matter what the circumstance.

Hi GrdStorm,
Just out of curiosity:
After 7 years of BJJ, what belt should an average individual (training 2 times a week under a Brazilian BJJ BB) have by then?

**we are now going to hear the, "I don't train with a black belt on a regular basis, therfore I can't get promoted" excuse.
Do all blue belts 'suck at BJJ' then? no. You can't be a blue belt and suck at BJJ. You CAN be a blue belt and suck at being promoted to purple.

blah I disagree, I've seen some poooooooooooooooooooor ass blue belts. After they get their bluebelts (after like 2-3 years because they are just really bad grapplers) they stagnate at that level. Trust me there are plenty of pretty aweful blue belts.
In 7 years if you train 2 times a week you should be atleast a NEW purple belt. This is if you are actually taking your training seriously and trying to actively improve yourself.

If the Gracie's trained in boxing/standup etc. What is there stand-up record?
How many has Royce knocked-out? To prove that they have the skill to fight and win stand-up they have to fight standing up. How much time do they spend training don't mean nothing! Training is very different from actual fights. How would Royce do fighting 4 rounders, if he's that good, he moves on to 6-8 rounds, How long can he last? Last week, there was a good boxing bout, Jermaine Taylor- Raul Marquez. Marquez trained for that particular fight, and spent the better half of his life, training for his professional boxing career, now it is over, despite his best efforts. But here's what, both fighters will knock-out Royce easily even if Royce is given a year or two to train.
Strikers who cross over to mma, do not face the equivalent of 4 rounder fighters, they have only a few months to train and are match into the best bjj/submission fighters around. Naturally most lose, This is where the myth that bjj rules! A striker has a better chance of winning in mma events, stamina and endurance are on their side, defensive training and a GOOD corner and he'll be competetive!
