  • time, priorities and training

    hey
just wanted to ask a few questions for everyone to answer.

    1. how often do you train per week?

    2. do you have a job or study or whatever else?

    3. how do you fit in training with your other commitments? eg. partner, mortgage, study, work, etc.

Whether we realise or not, people like us are the bulk of the martial arts community. Guys or gals who don't have the luxury to train full time. So how do you guys fit it all in.

Right now I have now until the end of Summer to train 5x's a week until I go back to finish my degree. It's easy to fit in my schedule bc I make time and make it a priority. Also I substituted it with lifting weights bc it way funner and I'm not interested in being "huge" anymore (however I'll never totally abandon lifting - just shift from heavy lifting to sports/performance based training)

I train as often as I can. Sometimes it's one or no times per week! Don't let it worry you. If training becomes a stress factor then it's not worth it. My rule is that my training can't negatively affect my marriage, my child my finances, or my physical or mental health. If it does then I back off. No worries. I got another 40 years or so to train.

I think it's a good question for discussion. It goes right along with questions like 'How often does one need to train in order to progress?' and also 'What goals do you have in training?'

I run in the morning 3-5dys/wk in the AM and am in the gym Mon-Fri (though some days I don't do much but chat and help out.

I have a family and work shifts. My priorities are:-

          Family first
          Work second
          Training third.

I usually get three x 1 hour sessions in a week.

            Thai Bri,

I think you still have a good time allocation with 3x 1 hour per week. An intensive training in that frequency is quite good. Knowing you, I assume that the training doesn't include a tea ceremony or dancing-in-a-pajama .

Not exactly. I have the Guinnes ceremony, and that leads onto dancing in my pyjamas.

I'm fortunate enough to be young and not having to worry financially. I know a lot of you guys out there are workin hard and training at the same time. so, all the power to ya! Fortunately for me I have a whole year off to train. I also pretty recently moved to a new city and have no (maybe a few) friends lol. I was training in kyokushin karate for 4 - 1.5 hours a week. but since mid june I've been training in muay thai and kyokushin 7 days a week for 1.5 hour sessions. Some people say that doing that is unhealthy, but i really dont do much except train. Plus, I used to teach karate 4 times a week for 4-5 hours a day (while going to school, and training 3 times a week), so I know how it feels to be drained. trust me, training 7 times a week is nothin. I'm just gonna take this amazing opportunity of mine to train full time and see how much I can improve in one year.

As long as you get the liver of yours checked. You gotta remember that once you get sick, then it is a big loss because you have to have a total rest. Be wise .

I do BJJ 3, sometimes 4 times a week. One of those sessions is 1 hour, the rest are 1.5. I was doing karate anywhere from 7-10 times a week, but I have problems with my knees, so I'm only doing 1 or 2 classes, and surfing the rest of the time.

I work, but I work from home and can, to a certain extent, adjust the times I work to suit what I'm doing. So I work during the night if I want to surf during the day, or I work during the day if I want to do BJJ/Karate during the night!

Like all things, balance is a must... I mean, what good is it to be the biggest, baddest boxing/muay thai/JKD stud but your girl leaves you because you don't spend enough time with her..

That's good topic to bring up because it vastly differs for people in different stages of there life as well as there socioeconomic status.

I for one am a full-time IT headhunter and live with my GF and pay rent and bills. Since I don't have any fights in horizon I teach 2x a week and go to the gym everyday (during my lunch at work 1hr) and eat during work.

When I had fighters who had events coming up or even for myself it would increase my workouts to 2 hours everyday after work (on top of going to the gym). The additional training would primarly consist of cardio and sparring (keep both seperate).

GQChris brought up a very good point - it is IMPERATIVE to have your loved ones fully support what you do both financially as well as time. Time not spent with the family due to training is actually more costly then $$$ spent on training. I've seen guys who really want to fight and tell there GF to piss off and try to be cool infront of there friends. They maybe alright in the beginning but come several months later the guys wouldn't be as happy coming bc they know that they're getting shit back at home. I'm a true believer of "if you don't have a strong backing from your family your not going to have a very successful career" whether it be fighting or work life.

So to go off on that but I think its very important aspect that is as important as nutrition when it comes to fighting in a sports setting.
