  • Help with choices

Hello everybody, I have decide to start a ma. I want to train mainly for self-defence and for fitness. I live in Victoria B.C. Canada and from what I can find my choices seem to be limited. From what I have read on here, my best bet for the self defence aspect is to find a place that trains in full contact sparring. From what I can see most of the full contact places seem to train Yoshukai Karate. From what I have read on here most people say to stay away from karate for any type of self defence. I have looked at most of the clubs that I can find and have chosen some that seem to be what I am after. I was hoping that some people could take a look at them, and tell me their opinion.

(This site is about full-contact karate, jujitsu, shoot-fighting training in Victoria Canada, taught by Master Hitoshi Shiozaki who is 6th dan black belt of Yoshukai and 9 time champion of)

sorry about the links, not sure how make them clickable. I was also looking at a place called Peterec's martial arts, wich trains Kickboxing. I was thinking about kickboxing or Muay Tai, but if one of these other places can train more of a mixed art with both stricking and grappling, I thought that would be good. If anybody knows of anyother places in Victoria B.C. that would be great too. Thanks for the help, and I am looking forward to you opinions.

Where do you get the Jiu Jitsu / grappling? It looks like straight Karate to me...

It looks fine for self defense, as it teaches striking and during sparring you'll get hit (which will be a real wakeup)enough to be prepared for it. It's astronomically unlikely that you'll be defending yourself from Kevin Randleman or anyone like that in everyday life, so go with it. Learn what you can and then take a class here or there from other schools to learn more and more stuff.

One tip: don't defend yourself with "head level roundhouse kicks" after 6 month s or whatever theyr'e promising, because you're 90% certain to lose when you start doing that stuff. If you want to knock some guy out at the bus stop from behind when he's not paying attention, high roundhouse is great, otherwise leave it at home....

Hey thanks for the reply, both of the descriptions under the links were the description that google gave me when I looked up the clubs. So that is where I got the grappling from.

I have to repeat this anytime some one asks for help in a decision.

The decision is based on YOU.

The choice would have to be what is closest to you and fits your budget.

Try it, if you like it, it doesn't matter what others will tell you.

              LOL!

No problem at all! I just hadn't seen this thread in a while

If the threads are good, it doesn't matter how old they are

I mean these would seem like chats instead of discussion.
