  • BJJ vs. Judo whats the difference

I was hoping some can tell my the difference between judo and BJJ. My kids train BJJ in daly city (9 & 6). I think it is to complicated for them. Is judo less technical?

judo isn't less technical it just focuses more on throws than ground work. judo does have submissions and much of the same groundwork as BJJ, but this is mostly cuz BJJ is by & large derived from judo. if your kids are enjoying BJJ let them stick with it you'll be suprised at how quickly they'll pick it up once they get the basics down (i sometimes think we take childrens intelligence for granted).

Much Judo today shies away form groundfighting. Referees quickly halt matches and stand the fighters up again. But BJJ specialises in ground fighting, so the'll find it hard to compete in purely Judo rules.

if ur kids did judo, they would probobly do good at bjj competitions. lotsa bjj tournaments start standing up, so u if u can throw ur oppoenent and hold on u can finish him easier. i was at a small bjj competition not too long ago to watch my friend compete. in one of the matches, one of the bjj guys nailed a perfect ippon seaonage on his opponent and was able to finish him with an armbar. he was the only bjj guy that used judo. everyone else would try for double legs, or jumping into guard. judo is pretty cool. i think they would get more out of judo. the college i go to has a great afterschool program for kids. its a judo class, and the kids love it. our schools judo is very strong in grappling too.

i train at san jose state university. they have the kids program here too , although i think the kids program is for underpriveliged kids and always fills up fast because there is limited space and many people want to send there kids to it. either way, here is the link to the sjsu judo page http://www2.sjsu.edu/orgs/SJSU_JUDO/
the guy who runs the afterschool program is David Williams.

Also, another good judo club in san jose is Buddhist Judo club. they have a kids program here as well and its pretty cheap to enroll. ive never been to this one, but i hear its pretty good. here is the link to it http://judoka.best.vwh.net/sjb/

i dont know why some people underestimate the grappling that is taught in judo.
this link has some judo grappling techniques.

real judokas can grapple very well. judokas use less technqiues, but excell at the ones they do use.
judo has tons of chokes, and armlocks. whats really cool is u can learn to throw someone right into an armlock. theres a guy ive seen who uses a a version of the drop seonage as his throw, and when he throws the guy, he holds his oppenents arm and brings it back behind them into an armlock in 1 quick motion.

I do not underestimate Judo and have seeing judokas performing well at BJJ competition.
The problem I have with Judo is the Judo restrictive rules when it comes to competition.
