If you want some respect, stop engaging in flame-wars with people. If people see you tossing insults and cut-downs back and forth, they will not want to converse with you at all, even if you have good things to contribute to the forum.

Also, please understand that in America, Dutch people are associated with: the wooden shoes, the dutchboy from advertising, the Pennsylvania Dutch (Amish, Mennonites: a sub-culture in the US who reject modern society and ride horses and don't use electricity).

That's not your fault, that's just the way it is. That's part of why they give you a hard time.

Most Americans are genuinely interested in other cultures and foreign lands, especially a land that has a place like Amsterdam.

      To get more respect:

      - don't engage in flame-wars
      - Start using your real name on the forum.
      - or Change your name to "Viking Machine" or something better than "duchman"
      - talk more about Gilbert Yvel.

I'm pretty sure Gilbert Ivel is a Dutch kickboxer.

No, "flying dutchman" sounds kinda gay.

Also, "duchman" is bad because it's not capitalized and would sound better if it were spelled "Dutchman". The "t" makes it sound better. Remember the nickname for one of our greatest movie heros John Wayne was "Dutch" (not "duch").

If you can't bring yourself to use your real name, get creative. Use something Northern European. Go here for some ideas.

Oh pulleez. Most Americans can't find North America on a map.

Most Americans are self-centered, jingoistic, chest-beaters who view the US as the center of the universe. I very seldom hear an American espousing the virtues of another culture, 99% of the time it's a put-down.

On this forum all I get is shit because I am a Brit. Just how is my birthplace relevant to jack shit? If everyone liked me and I was the most popular guy on the forum would that make Britain cool? Is Florida a neato place because Shit Dog is from there?

John- next time make sure you've had your triple-venti-latte before posting.

I have to agree with you in that many Americans are stupid and self-centered. But are you Brits much better? I am still not completly convinced that you are actually British, so I've made a test for you. 4 outa 5 wins the prize!!!!!

                  1.WHO WROTE "BEOWOLF"?
2.WHO WAS THE FIRST KING OF ENGLAND?
3.WHAT DID THE TERM "WHIG" ORIGINALLY STAND FOR?
4.WHAT DID THE TERM "TORY"ORIGINALLY STAND FOR?

LOL John: I guess the flaming duchman wouldn't work either!

And you're right Mr. Girl, most Americans are self centered and believe we're the center of the universe.

Take me for instance, I think it's pathetic when a country has to rely on a figure head like the queen to make the people feel good about themselves.

                    later dudes.....

                            Duchman,
The associations that SOME US residents put on the Dutch is no excuse for anything. Period.
While I don't know you that well, nor have talked to you that much. The one thing I won't do is make fun of your country, because it makes me and my own country look low class. I've never had a problem with you.
With the way people are here on the board, respect is something that comes and goes. People don't care about people's feelings much for the most part.
Don't think that's American, that's just a few people on this board.

You do tend to get into flame wars a lot But you don't have to change your name, or any other thing you don't want to do just to appease the people here. If you like you name, keep it. Say you peace, and don't care so much what people say.
I find it boring as hell, and disappointing when cultures get involved with flaming with each other (i.e. Holland and US, US and Japan, etc, etc) If some people think it's funny they can laugh by themselves, while other people progress in the world.
So don't worry too much. Make sure not to stereotype all of us either, and also not all Americans think of wooden shoes when they think of Holland. I for one do not.

                            Take care,
and be careful of taking stuff personally.
                            Very little is serious here.

                            Ryu

I, for one, can't help but think about Jules' and Vincent Vega's "Amsterdam Conversation" in Pulp Fiction when someone mentions Holland.

That and wooden shoes would be about it....

                              ...and duchman.
