SAO PAULO (Reuters) - A truckload of turkey and ham destined for the Christmas dinner tables of 500 Brazilian police officers was stolen by thieves, local media reported on Wednesday.
The truck was hijacked by robbers in Brazil's Minas Gerais as it was heading for the town of Itaperuna in neighboring Rio de Janeiro state, where the meat was meant to fill the annual Christmas food baskets of the police force.
But the bleak prospect of empty Christmas dinner plates vanished as quickly as the tasty cargo when the meat producer that owned the stolen truck sent more turkey the day after Sunday's robbery, media reports said. The thieves are still at large.
Police in Itaperuna could only confirm that they received their food baskets on time this week. The baskets, which all military police in the state receive, also include mayonnaise, oil, olives, a bottle of local sparkling wine, raisins, stewed peaches and sardines.
