I have a friend who has been taking Capoeira Angola for as long as I have taken Muay Thai. We're thinking of combining certain techniques of both arts. Has anyone here ever fought a capoeirista?

I know a couple of people who have combined muay Thai and Capoeira. They gave a great demonstration at the PNW muay Thai camp 2 years ago; it was beautiful to watch, and very athletic. I can see no downside for you doing this, as long as you realize the differences when it comes time to fight, and are careful during applications.

Chalambok, that would have been quite interesting to watch. I wish someone had a video cam to record that and put it to the Internet for all to see. For all things ring-related, if it catches on I'm sure it would give a new vibrancy to ram muay and wai khru. In fighting applications, at this time we are trying to devise, hone, and perfect a maneuver a fighter can used when knocked down by either a sweep or a blow. This idea of ours to combine techniques actually came by accident. We were messing around the other day, my friend throwing half-hearted punches and kicks at me while I dodged them, and I returned them in like manner. His cousin was watching us, and chided my friend, saying, "C'mon man, you ain't even doin' yo jenga!" "Oh!", I said. "Tyrone, let's see yo jenga!" Suddenly, Tyrone began a dancing move, and kicks, sweeps, and other leg maneuvers started coming very fast out of nowhere. We began sparring full contact. It was difficult trying to tell where he was coming from, but I did manage to get inside one of his kicks, only to be hit by another oncoming kick. The second time it happened, I blocked with my elbow. The side of his knee not used to impact, we stopped and both rested. My opinion of his technique -- much better than some TKD folks I sparred with.
