  • The Crawling Stance

In a grappling only match, has anyone ever used the crawling stance(where you have your knees sucked into your stomach, and basically crawl)? I believe it is the same one Eddie Bravo used in his match against Gracie(forgot which one ). If so,what did you think of the stance?

Can you explain further? I'm not sure what you mean.

      Open Guard

Watch Baret Yoshida vs. Megaton Diaz in the best of ADCC 2 or 3.. . He uses an upright open guard where his knees are tight to his chest. I think this is what your talking about. He tapped Megaton with a flying armbar.

The best way I can describe the crolwing stance is that it is like the sugar foot stance except your knees are in your stomach and you have your hands on the ground.

Sounds like an open guard game.

              open guard

A good open guard does not mean your restricted to lying on your back. A good open guard is mobile. Is flexible. Just lying on your back isolates your game, and invites the top player to simply pin your hips and pass. If your sitting up you can just as easily move forward as your can to the back or sides. If you feel you need to lay back, or are pushed back, hands and feet connect to the top player for sweeps or submission setups.

In short, if your playing open guard only laying on your back, your limiting your game. Sit up, dig for under and overhooks, and bring the fight to the top player. This could be seen as a 'crawling stance' just as easily as it could be seen as someing moving around on the mat with a 'mini-crabwalk'. Is it a stance? Setup? Open Guard? Could be all of them I suppose. Just my .03.

              Good training to you.
