Wrestling season just started and I am just out of it. My reflexes are slower than they used to be and I freeze when i'm on bottom. What are some combinations you can do when you are on the bottom referee's position? And what are some good breakdowns that you can do to lead to help you sink a leg in for a leg ride?

Wrestling season just started for me as well. Alot of the things that you should try are diffrent for diffrent weights and builds. If you like me, 6'3'' 189 pounds then it would be diffrent then somone that is 115 and short and 5'.

i remember my coach tellin me to plant my ass everytime i was on bottom referree. From there i would roll out or break his grip with a down elbow.

Not a good idea if BJJE is saying his reaction time is slow, he will get caught and stuck.

We discussed this before, if you are going to throw legs you need to know what you are doing. Which is exactly what practice is for .... practice. The bigger issue is making sure you are really comfortable throwing legs (the majority of wrestlers don't as a favorite), are you using the technique properly and what to do after you throw the legs.

I don't remember any "breakdowns" I just seized opportunities and used misdirection of a forearm on the back of the neck or threat of a tilt.

Now when you throw the legs it should be tight putting torque on the knee. So when you throw the leg you should be pushing the knee outward and ankle inward. This will help getting the arm or other leg

You have to extend the base if you want to throw in legs. But you really need to be careful about this. If you don't know what you are doing it's a good way to get in trouble.

So you're saying I should throw his weight forward so he has weight on his hands?
I am so frusturated right now. There's this senior(this is his first year wrestling) who's captain of the cross country and track team and he kicks my ass every time. He's strong and fast but I don't think that's the case. Mayhap I'm just not aggresive enough.Grrrr god damnit.

That and there's this nagging feeling in the back of my head that makes me afraid to shoot. I think it's because I'm afraid of getting sprawled on. Do I listen to this little voice or should I just say screw it and be more aggresive?

Just becuase you get sprawled on and some crossface doesn't mean you can't get the TD. You have to toughen up!! If someone beats becuase they were a better or more skilled athlete ...... fine it happens to everyone, what is not fine is making the job easy for your opponent. Remember the TD or any technique is not about the first shot it is usually about the 2nd and 3rd effort. Make the opponent fight or make them quit!!!!

Exactly!!!!!!!!!!!! Remember if you do the same things you will get the same results (Its up to you to determine if that is a bad or good thing).

                  Ps. Take Jubaji's advice

The main problem i have with this kid is that his legs are super strong and decent reflexes. He sprawls andit's like pulling at a tree stump. I'mthinking I should do a sitout the second he sprawls. Thatnks for the advice everyone! I got a new question now. Is it possibleto go for a fireman's carry from the overunder clinch and what are some good set ups and transitions to it?
