  • Strength beats technique???

    Hey doing a ISU for school on whether or not strength or technique is more dominant in contact sports.. .any thing from football , too boxing, too grappling... rugby... whatever. So what do you think does strength always beat technique...I mean ive heard stuff about Shaq taking BJJ and curling everybody who tries to arm bar him... that would be strength dominating technique... and if anyone has proof of this happening Id love to get my hands on it. Im looking for examples.. opinions.. video clips.. .research studies... or anything which would help me to prove strength or technique is more dominant in contact sports.

    Strength vs Technique: Usually the superior quality compensates for the other. So when comparing, you'd have to take that into consideration, as well as the fact that circumstances also affect your conclusion. What I mean by that is that in a dynamic fight, each situation will need to be assessed based on these qualities.

    I wouldn't go as far as to say that strength defeats all, but strength is an important factor in martial sports (rules/restrictions).

    Other types of fitness (like aerobic fitness) are important too.

    I guess that's why we have defined weight categories in BJJ, so that the 'gaps' in the two qualities you refer to, are contained to a degree.

      Let it be no doubt; being strong helps a lot however being an Advanced Martial artist helps a lot also. The key words here are pressure points and vital spots..............knowing them offsets strength. This applies to combat but I don't think it will help you much in Football.

        I've been very interested in BJJ ever since I was repeated tapped out by a 13-yr old kid half my size who knew BJJ. Although i was much stronger I wasnt able to break his armbar or chokes - or avoid ending up in them! So I would say thats a good example of technique dominating strength. It makes sense because positioning can be done without using too much force, and once a submission hold is on then strength counts for little. Also the element of surprise helps a lot: when I was first triangled, I didnt see it as dangerous at first probably because I could still move both my arms - it was only once i started to feel the choke that the helplessness started to set in! Im a bit suspicious of the stories of armcurls. Didnt help me with the kid i fought, and thats probably the equivalent. I would guess you need to be up to 3x stronger than your opponent to armcurl out of an armbar once its on properly?

          In the world of Western Boxing for example...... Strength will always defeat Techniques........

          In the world of MuayThai for example..... the most tough shinbone will always win the fight.....

          In the world of KungFu for example.... the most kungfu with excellent Technique will defeat a kungfu with a lesser technique.....

            Speaking in terms of mma and other mano-y-mano sports (like "grappling", boxing, and MT), superior technique beats superior strength (not always, but usually). However, once technique is fairly matched and there is not so much of an obvious mismatch, then strength and conditioning is more important and will be the deciding factor. Then there is the x-factor: heart, guts, and mental toughness.

            Just watch the first UFC where Royce schools everyone. Today an athletes conditioning is a vital part of their training because everyone's cards are on the table so to speak in terms of technique.

              I agree completely, Royce in his early days is a great example of superior technique.

              The story above about Shaq is probably a good example of superior strength.

              Right on about the 'X' factor too: fights are very dynamic.

                I have a different view of strength vs technique. When looking at the longterm, techique will be more superior as you will loose stregth over the years as you age. This logterm benefits are what Traditional training addresses. Strength is very important as well but not as important as good technique especially with grappling arts. I remember seeing this D1 college wrestling match where this HW ~230 beat this guy that was 500lbs. In Boxing Ali vs foreman. In K1 Remy Bonjasky 6'4" 239lbs beats Bob Sapp 6'7" 342 lbs.

                  I'd like to see that armbar done on Shaq in combination with a George Dillman style pressure point attack. I wonder if Shaq would curl out of it then. Grandmaster Dillman knows about a dozen presure points in the arm alone. Most of them are about the size of a Quarter. But that's advanced, very advanced.

                    I've got some Magic beans to sell you. Get out here with that "Dillman" pressure point bullshite. You say it's very advanced stuff - so advanced that only he and a few selected pupils can pull off in seminar and in class but never in competition bc it's too "deady" right?

                    You ever see that Fox news report on Dillman's student trying that shite on people - oh it worked great on his students but couldn't get it to work on BJJ students and even the reporter. He was making all kinds of stupid excuses.

                      I do beleive that Shaq curling out of an armbar is a joke... nothing to be taken serious. He is no stronger than your average HW or LHW for that matter; only taller.

                            Dude I think the best example is the Kempo guy in UFC 2 or 3 that beat Emmual Yarborough the 2 billoin pound sumo. But the Bonjasky vs Sapp is rally good Superior technique and decent strenghth compared to completly superior strength and weight technique won.
