If you lived in...say...New York City and had to choose between attending the Renzo Gracie Jiu Jitsu school that produced many fine Jiu-Jitsuka or a very reputable Muay Thai school (The Wat) that produces many Champs as well, which would you choose?

You can do both at the same place. Renzo's school has a MT instructor come in some days to teach. I don't know if your finances will allow for it, but it's something to keep in mind.
If it were me, I would train in bjj first, and pick up some MT when you can.

Try both, I'm sure they'll let you try a class. See which one you like because both styles are more than sufficient for street defence. You'll likely excell and stick to the style you like most.
Oh, and why is it soooo bad to fight on concrete? Hell, I'll sacrifice a few scratches and bruises if it means saving my ass and beating someone elses (at the same time saving my hands too). Yeah alot of streets are filthy but how often is a street totally covered by broken glass? Shit, who also says we fight on are backs all the time - man I've spiked people to the ground and taken mount, their backs, and knee on belly a couple of times.

I've always liked the technical aspect of BJJ but after taking a few classes a couple years back in college, I always seemed to find myself dominated by heavier guys and it frustrated the fuckincrap out of me. My recent interest in Muay Thai comes mostly from watching Vanderlei Silva and from Ong-Bak (awesome Muay Thai movie!) and the fact that smaller guys (i'm 150 lbs) seem to excel in the sport.
