  • grip strength

Hi, I have been involved in different styles of karate off and on for about 12 years of my life. Within the last 6 months I have started training in bjj. I enjoy the ground fighting very much, but I have realized that I need to improve my grip and hand strength. I have those grip things they sell in regular sporting good stores, but they really suck. I'm looking for a heavy duty or adjustable set of these things. Does anyone know of any products like that? Or any exercises that can really improve grip strength?

Captains of Crush at http://www.ironmind.com for grippers you can carry around.

As for regular exercises, there's a variety, from calisthenics (fingertip and wrist pushups) to sledgehammers to farmer walking to fingertip pullups to plate pinching to thick bar training. Check out John Brookfield's "Mastery of Hand Strength". Great book.

What koto was really saying was that he has 'other' methods of strengthening his grip...

        Here's one that Royce uses:

Get a chin up bar, and throw a gi top over it, so that one side of the collar hangs on either side of the bar. Grab the gi as if you were going to do a cross-lapel choke (i.e., hands crossed in front of you, palms towards you, gripping inside the collars with 4 fingers on the inside and your thumb on the outside). Now do chin-ups. This has the benefit of increasing your grip strength while at the same time strengthening your arms and back.

Also, any exercise that you could use a dumbell on, wrap a towel around the dumbell and do the exercise holding the towel instead. So curls, flys, tricep stuff - all of that, do it holding the towel instead.

masturbation. lots and lots of masturbation. be careful though to not spend too much of ur masturbatory time utilizing only one hand, use both evenly so u can develope good grip strength in both hands.

That's right - you'd look really dumb if you could only do BJJ with one of your hands.

Then people would know that you've been doing too much of the wrong kind of training...

Then again, if you did it enough so you got really, really strong, you might not look dumb. You might look tough.

You might want to check out John Brookfield, author of "Mastery of Hand Strength" and related texts. The man's incredible!

I'm into Clubbells and Circular Strength Training, and it's done amazing stuff for my grip. My site has a ton of info about it.

Now thats grip strength. Imagine being able to crush 400lbs in one hand. What would happen if this guy grabbed your throat or something?

                            Check out the Ironminds webpage.

These are all the people proven capable of being able to crush 365lbs...ever.

Do you guys think this guy is really doing this? Hes not on the ironminds website for being able to get 365.

                              Ha ha! good one!

I use nunshako's to strengthen my wrist and biceps, no guarantee, but if you like, try it... And its fun too...
