  • Evading or breaking the headlock

I have something akin to an Achilles' heel.

People wrap their elbows around my brain and squeeze and I can't get out of it cause I've got a goddamn big head.

Is there anything in particular one can to do either avoid or escape this most bastardly clasp?

    Help is appreciated.

It depends what position you are in, and where your opponent is when you get caught. Please give us more information, and I'm sure we'd be able to help you out.

There are many positions to get caught in a "headlock" from. There are many counters that work well but my favorite would be a throw or "takedown". Gravity is my friend. If you're already on the ground try driving your elbows or bony edge of your forearm against his jaw. That should break his grip and give you room to breath.

Depends ultimately on what position you're in. A common one is them holding you in a headlock at their side (say the right side), with your head held tight against their body and your body is behind theirs, as you're facing the same way. It can also be you facing the other way, or any number of positions, so let us know more so we can help you out.

Avoid it if possible but If you're caught in the headlock 1)grab the baby finger and apply a painful contorsion hold. ) or 2) Shoot your elbow back as soon as the lock is applied and follow up with a hammer fist to the groin.or 3.) do a sacrifice throw

If it is a front head lock where your arm is caught along with the head

Then take the arm that is trapped in the headlock, grab his elbow swing yoruself hard in the same direction as the arm that you have trapped.

Or if they have a headlock on you without trapping your arm, it is called a guillotine.

Let us say you are caught in the guillotine just like in this picture. First you should point your chin towards his elbow and try to tuck your chin in so you can breathe. Have your right hand come up on his arm and tug it down to take a little bit of the pressure off. Next take your left arm and bring it over his right shoulder. Now use the arm to pull yourself up use one of your legs to hook his. What this does is hang all your weight on him. He should not be able to put too much pressure on you at this point. At this point use your free arm(the arm that is tugging his arm down so you can breathe) to try to work your head out form there.

This is a choke, not a headlock. The question was, how to get out of a headlock. And, just like a lot of other people have said, it depends on your position and the position of the other person.

IS THAT A FACT? LOL The guillotine (my Mae hadaka jime) isolates the head and neck, does it not? A strangle is a headlock too. (If it's done right). Otherwise you need to isolate the torso...
Did I say it depends on your positions?

I did say "AS YOU WERE" ...

Tant01- doesn't say anything about being CHOKED, does it.

A very simple way out of headlocks, besides the obvious - not getting into one, is simply to pop the elbow with simultaneously pulling the head out. I used this for wrestling alot it is a great counter set-up as well.

Also, a head-lock is just that it does not (should not ) involve the trachea or corotid (neck). So in truth it cannot be a form of choke.

The front headlock and Guillitine are different techniques with different objectives.

Hallelula! I thought I was the only one seeing the difference here! And I agree with IPON. I've found great success pushing on the elbow while backing out. It sets up taking their back very nicely.

There ya go... word from a pro, a "guillotine" is NOT a head lock... One more time? Squeezing the mellon is a "head lock" but isolating the neck to attack the trachea or corotid is not a head lock? How about you lean back with that choke hold and apply pressure to the neck vertibra? Is it a headlock then?

Guess it's time I went back to school, eh?

edit to define headlock(no pun intended); Noun.

a wrestling hold in which the opponent's head is locked between the crook of your elbow and the side of your body...

Found another crapolla site (a goshin jutsu combat academy page) offering advise on escaping a headlock

"Even the roughly applied version of this hold can be dangerous and will give you problems escaping. The side headlock when clamped on can constrict the carotid arteries running up the side of the neck and slow blood flow down to the brain, making a sleeper hold.....The front headlock can become a powerful choke to the windpipe or a severe neck crank if twisted".

                              Hmmm.....
