Why can’t you say that you just got into a fight? It just sounds ridicules to here street fight over & over again. What if you live in a town with no streets just country roads? Does that mean that you got in a country road fight? No you got in a fight. Or does saying street fight vindicate your style as being legitimate because if it doesn’t work on the streets it’s useless. Well I got my ass kicked in the ring or on the mat but in the streets that guy would be dead. He is no match for my death touch or serpent rising dragon kick. Well you know what you better have a good lawyer to go along with that kick cause you’re gonna need it.

Well, if a fight breaks out between two midgets in a pit of jello pudding pops and Bill Cosby just happens to drop by and announce the fight it could be considered a 'street fight'...

as long as neither midget, nor Cosby is getting compensation.

Yeah, I tend to agree with you. Though, the street fight sounds much more violent. I guess it is trying to distinguish between maybe a school yard fight, two ten year olds in the backyard and two should-be adults in the club parking lot.

If you're out getting into fights regularly then you are either a punk, retard, immature or all of the above. No, I don't stand above the crowd so I could just as easily be put in those categories as well at one point or another in my life. But that is the truth about people running around getting into fights for no reason.

What should be said,e.g. "I fought thru a criminal assault". Though, anyone claiming they had to defend themselves over 200 times really need to rethink their self defense strategies.

Or does saying street fight vindicate your style as being legitimate because if it doesn’t work on the streets it’s useless.
Since everyone watched "The Knockaround Guys" they all need to have a mystical number that represents their level of badassness. Some people aren't secure in their system that they have to try some hype to both feel better about themselves and to attrack money, oops, I mean students.

Well I got my ass kicked in the ring or on the mat but in the streets that guy would be dead.
Success in the ring doesn't always transfer to the streets. Or it could be a sore losers way out of having a bruised ego.

Well you know what you better have a good lawyer to go along with that kick cause you’re gonna need it.
Not if you're rightfully defending yourself.

                  My "streetfight" rant

“Street fighting” comes from urban warfare (particularly WWII) where people were literally fighting in the street. I don’t know how the term came into common usage to mean a civil assault/battery. The question I have is, where are all these “streetfights?” I’ve talked about this before. People act like getting in a one on one fight with a guy who know Muay Thai and BJJ is some real pressing threat and will train for a one on one match like its coming up. Most one on one fights as that term is commonly understood occur between friends and family who get pissed off at each other over something. Then, there are brawls that break out in bars or other places where there is alcohol. Even one on one “honorable” fights aren’t in a neat arena. There are almost always groups of people around, and major terrain to navigate. If you’re not a hillbilly who likes to fight with your cousins and their friends, then that cuts your chances of getting in a fight such as this about in half. Then, how many times have you seen drunk guys get into brawls? You may go your entire life without seeing it. The answer is it’s pretty rare. You may see guys cuss at each other, even shove each other. But going to blows is rare. The fact is that people have a fear of one on one fair fights–as they should. Humans are opportunistic animals, which is why we prefer tools to our bare hands. Humans have survived in harsh environments using their minds and the ability to obtain “unfair” advantages over nature and other humans who were competing with them. Would you prefer to fight a wild cat with your fists as opposed to using the aid of a sharpened stick or a rock? Then, why, if your goal is to win/survive a fight, would you fight a man with your fists, when you could pick up a ____________ (bottle, stick, tire iron, bat, etc...) And use it as a weapon. Would you rather fight a bear with two of your friends helping, or would you rather fight him one on one in a true honorable fashion? What I’m illustrating here is the mindset of someone who truly makes a point of surviving through violence on the street. That’s how true “streetfighters” think. That’s how “street punks” and criminals think. That’s also how cops and soldier think. We do arm our military and cops don’t we? Cops and soldiers are highly regarded. But, they are doing what humans who truly survive in harsh environments do—they get the advantage anyway they can. They aren’t interested in who won the last UFC. These weapon and/or group based assaults are the type of assaults that are more likely to happen–and even those are rare. I guess my rant means this, people are training more and more these days for sport fighting (which is the absolutely rarest form of fighting in the world and throughout the history of man-kind) and calling it "street fighting." “Martial” arts, on the other hand, were just that–systems for true “martial” combat/confrontations. I’m all for sporting competition, but we have to keep in touch with how humans really fight and why humans fight.

Aaahhh yes, that well known street fighter Bing "one punch straight down" Crossby!
Especially when in combat with a midget!

The term Streetfight is used to differentiate from a fight say in a training club, say boxing, kickboxing, bjja etc.

As in a street situation there are no rules! - at all!

There is nothing to stop someone using any means to win.

I know people who are excellent at their chosen martial arts even bjjs-
but I also know people who have no martial arts training whatsoever unyet in a real so called street fight - I know who would normlly win!

So the term street fight is used as most people live in towns / cities and so it is used as a term to differntiate from a controlled environment!

In other words - outside the gym/dojo/training area/ etc

unless you are Bing crosby - in which case a film set would suffice!

Good post Shoot! It's funny that you mention fighting with friends and family. Me for sure one hill billy. Cousins and brothers taught me good! My first gun "disarm" (before any formal training) I took a .357 Mag away from my mom who was raising the weapon to sight on my dad...Ahh, savor the dysfunction... That was before the divorce and another incident with the same gun. She was charged w/ 7 counts of attempted murder. Pled down to SA and got 4 years of probation for that one! She fired two warning shots over the hill while her friend (out of sight of the "victims") shot 8 rounds with a (my) 30-30 in the general area they were in. He was never charged...

The incident became known locally as the Cougar Creek "shootout" even though no one returned fire...

Anyone here ever heard the term "gutter-fighting" I think street fighting is just a cleaner way of describing gutter-fighting. But folks like to forget the mean-nasty tactics that are too brutal or sanguinary for civilized society. No sport application for a garote or a knife, eh? Such is the state of modern MA.
