  • Best system or combination of systems

In your honest opinion, what do you envision as either the best system of fighting or the best combination of systems of fighting? I am interested in investing my time into this, I am coming from an American boxing background.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

What's wrong with sticking to boxing?
Do you feel that you're missing out on something, or do you just want to move on? Boxings pretty good if you ask me.

      Hmm...

There's nothing wrong with boxing at all, I've been a fan and actively training through it's methods for awhile now...I love boxing.

I was just wanting to expand my horizons a bit though and wanted a little input as to the different martial arts systems and their pros and cons.

If you are looking to expand your training in an attempt to become a more wholesome fighter you are going to need to invest some time in a grappling art. BJJ is my grappling art of choice though others have been succesfull with wrestling, judo, whatever strikes your fancy.

Thats a pretty broad scope question.... I personally prefer CSW which is Combat Submission Wrestling, a system designed by Erik Paulson, who was a former champion Shooto Fighter in Japan. His system is very well rounded and covers all ranges. Check it out if you get a chance, www.erikpaulson.com or www.combatsubmissionwrestling.com

Having said the above, I should add, that when researching this subject, Its my opinion that to be a competitive fighter in this modern day, you should consider getting training on the following, boxing, kicking, knees, elbows, chokes, wrestling/grappling, submissions, throws, etc. Just my thoughts....

I like the way the ranges are divided at SBG:

              Stand up
              Clinch
              Ground
              --
I like that more than the old standard:

              punching
              kicking
              throwing
              ground
              --

It makes more sense to me than the standard division of ranges. "Striking" isn't really a range, as people can strike on the ground or in the clinch, etc.
