Do they hurt the effectiveness of BJJ like point-Karate tournaments did to Karate?

I feel there is alot more you can use in sport BJJ than you can in sport karate

It just seems that concentrating on using the gi could hurt you in a real fight-Although you can choke someone with their t-shirt it's still not the same as a gi.

I think that tournament BJJ is still somewhat valid. It focuses on the main strategies of BJJ: positioning and submission. Depending on the gi, I admit, could be a distraction, but in our school, we train with and without the gi.

Point karate, on the other hand, entirely misses the point......and it promotes bad habits for application on the street.

Given that BJJ isn't 100% infallible on the street at it's purest "giless" form....the sport application of this art fits better than that of karate "point" fighting.

Personally, I do tourneys for fun, maintain conditioning, meet people, and spend time away from my wife.

I train for real/street fighting in a different way so I try to distinguish my training. With that said, I think tournament BJJ is a helluva lot more realistic than point karate (which I have done in the past).

With BJJ, there is a sense of continuity between moves, as well as strategies that continually change. This is in contrast to point Karate that emphasizes one technique, one kill, which is very unrealistic.

Bottom line, tournaments are not real fights, but they can teach some good fundamentals that when supplemented with selfdefense training will make you a more complete fighter.
