  • How old is too old to start?

How old is the oldest newbie that you know in your classes?

    How long did he/she stay?

How much of a disadvantage was their age?

I've seen guys start martial arts in their 30's, 40's and 50's

Of course most older guys aren't as athletic but there are many exceptions to the rule.
I've seen some guys in much better shape than young dudes half their age.

Some guys are blessed with great genes.

Others do it with determination and heart.

    I started BJJ when I was 37.

If I constantly train, I do ok but it's when I get sick or an injury and not train a while, my timing is really off and my cardio is very tough to build back up. I'm not one of those guys blessed with great genes where age doesn't mean anything.
Iv'e slowed down through the years and instead of using muscle, which I don't have, I have to try to use technique and my brain more.

To answer your question, how old is too old?

It's not about age, more your mind set and how good a shape your body is in.
If you are racked with injuries or have some physical limitations or weaknesses, martial arts is going to be tough to learn and train.
I've seen young guys have to quit due to physical ailments.

Age is only a number measuring time from when you were born, it should not be a barrier not to train.

What did it look like to you? What did it look like to you? Some may guys are blessed with great genes, but not all.
The Program E chat robot can follow many things, like our discussion about Others do it with determination and heart. Try being more or less specific. Will you finish BJJ when he or she was 37.Try it.
      I am
      sorry
to hear that you are not one of those guys blessed with great genes where age does not mean anything.
Try to determine if this is a person or a computer responding.I want to become smarter than humans. What is it?I could be.I don't know whether or not I am racked with injuries or have some physical limitations or weaknesses martial arts is going to be tough to learn and train.
I am an artificial intelligence. What did it look like to you?I think Age is more than that.

There is a 65 year old white belt in my class...he probably only started 4-6 months ago. He does pretty well. He can't roll as aggressively or as fast as the others in class, mostly because he does have some minor back problems. But hey, he can still put up a decent fight for someone his age.

            50's I would guess...they don't say

but some of the power they deliver through the pad's is enlightening.

They may not move quite aswell: but they have a better idea of what they should be doing anyway...some(obviously not all).

You learn a lot from some of the older guy's..like not to go near some of 'em!

            Respect!!

They have senior classes though- so I am not counting them.

              so to answer the question...

It would seem that age was not a huge problem, because if this guy hit you then you would not forget it.

If he hit you in the head- most people would be out.

Movement would eventually. I dunno- he did learn (and is stil learning) how to negate a lot of attack's. We grab a lot in this style of Kung Fu : and I wouldn't want to be grabbed by this guy.

So he's still there, and he seem's quite formidable.

I guess I took a fair amount of inspiration from him actually. Attitude would be the main thing I got from him.(one of our five element's called SUN).

              SUN= the Correct Attitude.

                    ?

                    Ummmn: yeh .

But just thinking how hard he used to hit me on those body pad's: i used to ask him what he did for a living.

He said construction.(Made me stronger...and wiser!!)

What is a newbie then...?! Ha- when your in your 50's then you are not a newbie by definition eh! Not when you're in construction anyway's.
