America's Most Wanted showed a re-enactment of an escaped convict who ran into some dudes home, tackled him and choked him with his bare hands. This is definitely a BJJ type situation, as sprawling, bridging and mount reversals are an everyday type drill.
So IF a LONE unarmed escaped convict breaks out of jail, and enters your UNLOCKED home, BJJ is the self defense of choice? NOT!! Locking your doors and owning and CARRYING weapons you are TRAINED to use is the answer...

Just because youre at home doesnt mean you shouldnt be armed!! I have cold steel nightshade kerambits in each shower in the house, (I got caught in the shower once by a home invasion) (i was naked and unarmed against 2 armed idiots, dont tell me it cant be done) never again.

Its simple FEW muggers, theives, rapist or assorted scumbags are TRAINED Martial artist...a properly trained STRIKER can easily deal with one or two AVERAGE JOES with little trouble... by staying up and mobile you have a chance of finishing quick or escaping...on the ground you may be there QUITE some time if the attacker has ANY skill at all....

If you go to the ground to defeat average joe in a fight, you endangered yourself out of stupidity...if his friends show up your done for...I cant count the number of fights i have been in over the years, I aint spent 10 seconds TOTAL on the ground....i slipped on a broken beer bottle (thanks to my cowboy boots) and other than that i aint been to the ground since highschool... Ive seen MANY fools who found out bouncers dont like sticking their own face low to the ground to separate two fighters on the ground because you might get kicked yourself or slashed by a hidden blade while lifting one idiot off the other...hence the pointy toed cowboy boots...a properly aimed kick is the best "break it up" trick in the book
(warn them first to be fair)....kick the guy on top in the coycx, ribs or head depending on the situation and let the guy on bottom get up AFTER the guy you kicked figures it out...

remember you aint fighting trained Martial artist in streetfights, youre fighting troublemakers who RELY on weapons and friends...the arch enemy of bjj....its your life...spend it as you see fit.

    • I love Bando in the streets or in the ring or on a matt...Inosanto has many demenstrations from Dr. Gyi's students, at his academy...Though any system that one perfects is what that individual will be best at in the streets..

I love those Coldsteel Nightshade series knives, I'm about to order some; there have been instances where I have been paranoid while stepping into the shower thinking that there is someone unwelcome in the house... I hate that feeling...

          .
No, I completely agree Boar. The victim in this case was untrained and didn't carry any weapons. Agreed even when you're in house, you need stuff nearby. The point I was making is that sometimes, even the empty-handed stuff is usefull.

Empty hand stand up skills saved my life and perhaps the life of my 2yr old that day...had i been a bjj guy i would have been dead...i did wind up in the hospital, having the remains of a halogen bulb removed from my groin One of the guys picked up a floor lamp and swung it at me baseball bat style as i fought my way out of the bathroom, i instinctively kicked it away while fighting the other idiot...the bulb shattered and peppered my thigh and groin...i remember realizing i was bleeding from my crotch, thats the last thought that isnt a jumbled mess...i simply went into survival mode, and DID...no way in hell anything other than the years of FMA training would have helped that day...

When it was all said and done the police found 2 cheap knives and a crowbar lying amidst the mess...i was still gripping a toothbrush i apparently grabbed and used....i dont recall that, but it was bloody and had been used for something....

A toothbrush... Imagine THAT! I have... That's pretty sick. I always feel the most vulnerable sitting on the pot myself. At least in the shower you're on your feet.

That feeling is called 'paranoid chicken shit'.

Or, in rare cases it can manifest as 'move somewhere else, moron!'
